Description
Mauxion Petite Champagne 1958 is an exceptionally old vintage Cognac selected exclusively for Passion for Whisky. After more than 65 years of full maturation in oak, it was bottled in September 2024 at 51%, with a remarkably limited outturn of just 78 bottles. Despite its considerable age, this Petite Champagne remains strikingly vibrant, displaying beautiful tension between citrus fruit, floral notes, spices and mature oak.
Tasting note
Nose

Deep, refined and intensely fruity, with mandarin, fresh orange, apricot, mirabelles and quince. Jasmine, rose petals, mint and eucalyptus are complemented by honey, leather, camphor and elegant rancio.

Palate

Full and energetic, with orange zest, mandarin, grapefruit and rich marmalade. Juicy apricot and passion fruit mingle with white pepper, orange blossom, mint oil and subtle mineral dryness. Mature oak provides structure without overwhelming the fruit.

Finish

Exceptionally long and layered, with orange peel, dark chocolate, eucalyptus and camphor. Delicate pepper, liquorice and restrained tannins create a powerful yet elegantly drying conclusion.

Mauxion

The history of Mauxion reaches back to 1575, when Pierre Mauxion was born in the Cognac region. The family established itself as winegrowers in Fins Bois, and in 1743 Antoine Mauxion became the first generation to distil wine into eau-de-vie on the family estate. This marked the beginning of a tradition that now spans many generations. In 1865, Charles Mauxion gave the house a clearer commercial identity by registering his initials as a brand and trading wines and eaux-de-vie from the region.

Today, Mauxion combines this centuries-old heritage with a particular interest in Cognac’s hidden stocks. Led by Thibault Mauxion, the house selects rare parcels from small family producers, sometimes drawn from casks that have rested almost undisturbed in old cellars for decades. Mauxion Selection includes cognacs from all six crus of the appellation, including Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois. Many releases come from a single estate and a single cask, are bottled at natural strength and appear without added colouring or chill filtration. In this way, Mauxion reveals not only the effects of extended maturation, but above all the remarkable differences between growing areas, vintages and individual producers.
