Boogieman Beer Society Imperial Stout 2024-004 Barrel Aged
This special initiative by Wijn- en Whiskyspecialist Van der Boog focuses entirely on the art of beer maturation. While many people are familiar with the concept of a wine cellar, few enthusiasts take the time to age their beers.
Yet, there are numerous beers that improve significantly when stored properly over time. Think of renowned examples like Westvleteren 12, Cuvée van de Keizer Blauw, or Hertog Jan Grand Prestige.
We proudly present the fourth beer bottled under the Boogieman Beer Society x Eggens Craft Beer label. This exceptional beer is an Imperial Stout that spent approximately 950 days maturing in barrels previously used by a Scottish Malt Whisky distillery based in Dufftown. While we can’t name the distillery, let’s just say the stag plays a prominent role in its branding.
What is a Imperial Stout
An Imperial Stout is a robust and rich beer style renowned for its high alcohol content, full-bodied flavor, and complex aroma profile. Originally developed in England during the 18th century, this style was brewed for export to Russia and the Baltic states. The term "Imperial" refers to its association with the Russian Imperial Court, where the beer's higher alcohol content and bold flavors helped it withstand the long journey overseas.
Our Imperial Stout has matured for 950 days in barrels from a Dufftown distillery, adding an extra dimension of complexity. The result is a beer that lets no light through, with a velvety brown foam crown. Its aroma reveals notes of sweet chocolate, roasted malt, and powerful bitterness. Upon the first sip, roasted malt dominates, followed by a pronounced coffee-like bitterness.
This beer tingles delightfully on the tongue, finishing with a soft, sweet, and subtly bitter flavor reminiscent of Dutch Haagse hopjes candies.
Aging advice
We recommend an aging period of 4 to 5 years for optimal flavor development. However, we understand if patience isn’t your strongest suit. This beer is also ready to be enjoyed immediately.
Tasting note
Appearance
Deep, opaque black with a thick, creamy mocha-colored foam that holds beautifully. The beer leaves an oily sheen on the glass, emphasizing its rich texture.
Nose
A powerful aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and freshly brewed espresso. Barrel aging adds layers of bourbon, oak, and vanilla. Subtle hints of dried fruits like raisins and figs emerge in the background, accompanied by a touch of smoke and syrupy sweetness.
Palate
Rich and velvety. Roasted malt takes the lead with intense flavors of dark chocolate, lightly burnt caramel, and a hint of toffee. Barrel aging contributes a warming character with nuances of oak, vanilla, and a delicate bourbon influence. Dark cherries and dates add a fruity balance, while hints of leather, tobacco, and a slight nuttiness deepen the flavor.
Mouthfeel
Full-bodied and silky smooth, with a creamy texture that coats the palate. The low carbonation enhances its richness and allows the flavors to develop gradually.
Finish
Long, warming, and indulgent. The sweetness of chocolate and caramel is perfectly rounded by a gentle bourbon warmth, while a dry, slightly bitter roasted finish adds balance and complexity.
Conclusion
A masterpiece of an Imperial Stout, elevated to new heights by its time in the barrel. Complex, bold, and luxurious—perfect for slow sipping and savoring. Highly recommended for stout enthusiasts and barrel-aged beer aficionados alike.
