Saburomaru 2020 - 2023 The Empress III
Saburomaru 2020-2023 The Empress III is a Japanese whisky from Saburomaru Distillery, owned by Wakatsuru Shuzo, one of the oldest distilleries in Japan. This distillery is known for its artisanal approach to whisky production and a history dating back to the early 20th century. ‘The Empress’ series pays homage to strong and influential female figures, and this particular whisky is the third edition in that series.
Tasting note
Nose
A hint of smoky peat greets the nose, but not overwhelmingly so. The smoke is subtle and mixed with a pleasant, almost sweet smell of caramel and honey. After a few moments, more complex aromas emerge. There is a slight fruitiness, with notes of green apple, pear and a hint of lemon peel. A delicate vanilla undertone emerges from the use of wood. A slight pepperiness mingles with ginger and perhaps a hint of cinnamon, adding depth to the nose.
Taste
Smoke opens the taste experience, followed by a powerful maltiness and hints of roasted nuts. The fruit notes of the nose also return, with more emphasis on caramelised apples and pears. There is a clear wood influence, probably from the short but intense maturation in Japanese casks, leading to notes of vanilla and oak. There is a subtle balance between sweet and spicy, with notes of light caramel, toffee and honey contrasting with spicy touches of black pepper and nutmeg.
Finish
Medium-length finish that lingers elegantly, with a gradual fading of peat smoke.
