Description

Those familiar with Islay probably will not need long to decipher the name Kildalton. The famous Kildalton Cross stands on the south eastern side of the island, in the same corner where Ardbeg produces its unmistakably characterful single malt. Living Souls may not print the distillery name on the label, but they have hardly gone out of their way to make the secret impossible to solve.

Kildalton 21 years Batch #2 is exactly what the name suggests: 21 year old Ardbeg, matured in refill bourbon and sherry casks and bottled at natural cask strength. Remarkably, that strength is just 42.6%. For a cask strength whisky, this is unusually low. One possible explanation is that one of the casks lost some spirit through leakage during maturation, although it is not known whether this involved the bourbon or sherry cask.

And then there is the whisky itself. Grilled pineapple, burnt sugar, caramel and dried fruit are joined by peat smoke, salty sea air and that unmistakable industrial character of mature Ardbeg, bringing to mind fishing boats, rope, oil and weathered wood. After 21 years the smoke has not disappeared, but has become beautifully rounded and fully integrated with the fruit and oak.

This has everything you would hope to find in mature Ardbeg: age, depth, smoke, maritime character, fruit and plenty of personality. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that this Living Souls bottling is offered at a fraction of the price usually asked for a comparable aged release from the distillery itself. For lovers of mature Ardbeg, that makes this a particularly exciting opportunity.

Tasting note
Nose

Warming peat smoke with grilled pineapple, burnt sugar and soft caramel. Dried fruit, citrus peel and toasted malt follow, joined by salty sea air, tar, rope and mature oak.

Palate

Full and layered with grilled pineapple, dark caramel and dried fruit. The peat smoke is deep and mature, with notes of toasted wood, oil and black pepper. Salinity and a lightly medicinal character provide unmistakable Islay tension, while the long maturation has rounded everything beautifully.

Finish

Long and smoky with burnt sugar, dried fruit and dark oak. Peat, pepper, salinity and a touch of tar linger with impressive persistence.

Ardbeg Distillery

Ardbeg Distillery stands on the rugged southern coast of Islay, not far from Port Ellen. The distillery was officially established in 1815 by John Macdougall, although whisky was probably produced in this remote bay before that date. During the nineteenth century, Ardbeg became one of the island’s largest producers, but a turbulent period followed. Production stopped in 1981. After a brief revival and a second closure, the distillery was rescued in 1997, when The Glenmorangie Company acquired Ardbeg and brought it back to life. Three years later, the Ardbeg Committee was founded to connect whisky enthusiasts around the world.

Ardbeg is renowned for intensely smoky Islay single malt Scotch whisky with remarkable finesse. Its malt is heavily peated, while a purifier attached to the spirit still creates additional reflux. This keeps powerful notes of peat smoke, tar, ash and sea air in balance with citrus, spice, sweetness and fruit. Water from Loch Uigeadail and the distillery’s coastal location add further depth to its distinctive character. This combination of power, complexity and an unconventional identity has made Ardbeg one of the world’s most admired peated whiskies.
