Description

Tamnavulin is not a distillery that often appears as an independent bottling, especially at 15 years of age. Living Souls has also chosen simplicity at its best: the whisky spent its entire maturation in bourbon barrels without any additional finish. This gives Tamnavulin's soft and fruity Speyside character plenty of room to shine. Bottled at 48%, it is a beautifully mature expression filled with juicy orchard fruit, creamy malt, vanilla and gentle spice.

Tasting note
Nose

Ripe red apple and pear with soft stone fruit and vanilla. Toasted almonds and marzipan add depth, followed by creamy malt, buttery shortbread and a touch of toasted oak.

Palate

Full and smooth with red apple, ripe pear and juicy stone fruit. Creamy malt and vanilla are joined by marzipan, treacle and warming ginger. The bourbon casks add gentle oak and sweetness without overpowering the fruit.

Finish

Long and pleasantly warming with vanilla, toasted oak and soft malt. Apple, gentle spices and a touch of caramel linger nicely.

Tamnavulin Distillery

Tamnavulin opened in 1966 in the small Speyside village of Tomnavoulin. The modern distillery was built on the site of an old carding mill, whose wooden water wheel still appears on the label. The name Tamnavulin means ‘mill on the hill’ and refers to this historic location beside the River Livet.

Difficult market conditions led to the distillery being mothballed in 1995. Following a short testing period around 2000, a major refurbishment was completed in 2007 and full production resumed. In 2010, the shape of the stills was altered to create a richer spirit suited to further maturation and finishing in different cask types. From 2016, Tamnavulin gained a clearer identity as a single malt brand once again.

The house style is smooth, sweet and fruity, with notes of apple, pear, vanilla, honey and gentle spice. The whisky is generally matured first in American ex-bourbon casks before gaining additional depth from a second cask, including sherry, wine or port wood. This gives Tamnavulin an approachable Speyside style with enough variation to interest experienced whisky drinkers.
