Tasting note

Colour

Straw yellow

Nose

Dried fruit with toasted nuts, with almonds and water nuts predominating. The alcohol also causes us to gently sniff the glass. After some time, a lovely sherry aroma from the glass also enters our nose. Powerful, yet within the lines.

Taste

The first thing we think of is a red velvet cake topped with dark chocolate and some crumbling nuts. Dark sweet tea and, in terms of mouthfeel, even a little oily. Nice and thick. It is generally not our preference to add water, but if you add it to this whisky, the nutty aromas come out extra.

Finish

Again, almonds, walnuts, dried fruit and a hint of vanilla cream.

Overall impression

This is Glenfarclas as we had not tasted it before. Obviously a clear sherry character, but what a flavour bomb. An unusual, but a very good choice from our Japanese colleagues. 

Extra information

Glenfarclas means 'valley of green grass', an indication of the richness of the pasture land surrounding the distillery. Indeed, the farm on the same piece of land on which the distillery is built existed from ein 1790 to 1988. Like so many farms in the 18th century, much illegal distilling was done with the surplus grain grown. Since 1865, the distillery has been owned by the Grant family. In 1865, Glenfarclas was acquired for £512 and to this day the distillery belongs to the Grant family. This makes Glenfarclas one of the few distilleries in Scotland that is still a family-run business where the family is at the helm.
