SCHOTSE WHISKY REGIO'S

Bons Bois is one of the six official Cognac regions and forms a broad belt around Fins Bois. This extensive area has highly varied soils, including clay, sand and pockets of limestone. As a result, styles differ considerably, although Bons Bois Cognacs are often rounded, fruity and relatively quick to mature.

Borderies is the smallest of the six official Cognac regions and lies north of the town of Cognac. Its soils mainly consist of clay and flint-rich limestone. Cognacs from this region are known for their rounded, refined character and distinctive floral aromas, often associated with violets.

Fins Bois is the largest of the six official Cognac regions and surrounds Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne and Borderies. Its soils mainly consist of clay and limestone, although this extensive area has considerable local variation. The Cognacs are known for their rounded, smooth character, pronounced fruitiness and relatively quick development during maturation.

Petite Champagne surrounds Grande Champagne and is considered the second most important Cognac region. Its chalk-rich soils closely resemble those of Grande Champagne, but contain more clay and are slightly less porous. The Cognacs are generally elegant, fruity and floral, with excellent ageing potential and slightly quicker development.

Grande Champagne lies at the heart of the Cognac region and is known as the Premier Cru. Its soils are rich in soft limestone, allowing the vines to develop deep roots. Cognacs from this region are generally refined, floral and powerful, with exceptional ageing potential and a slow development.
