Port Dundas 14 years 2008 - 2023
The Port Dundas 14 years 2008 - 2023, bottled by Signatory Vintage, is a refined and unique grain whisky from the now-closed Port Dundas distillery. This expression, matured in refill sherry casks, offers a wonderful balance between the soft, smooth characteristics of grain whisky and the rich, subtle influences of the sherry cask. The result is a complex yet approachable dram that appeals to both novice and seasoned whisky lovers. A whisky that evokes nostalgia while offering a modern twist with its unique maturation.
Tasting note
Nose
Aromas of raisins, dried figs, and honey dominate, with a hint of toasted almonds and a subtle touch of cinnamon. Notes of caramel and a light floral nuance round out the nose.
Palate
Silky and full-bodied on the palate, with rich flavors of toffee, milk chocolate, and ripe peach. The sherry casks contribute a layered sweetness, with accents of dark berries and a gentle spiciness of nutmeg and white pepper.
Finish
Medium-length and refined, with lingering notes of honey, toasted oak, and a touch of dark chocolate. The finish is soft, lightly spiced, and leaves a warm impression.
Port Dundas Distillery
Port Dundas Distillery was located in Glasgow, on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, and was founded in 1811. This historic distillery played a crucial role in the production of grain whisky and was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland. Port Dundas merged with nearby Cowlairs Distillery in 1860, significantly increasing its production capacity.
A unique feature of Port Dundas was the use of continuous stills, which enabled efficient and large-scale production of grain whisky. The distillery produced whisky that was used in some of the most famous blends, such as Johnnie Walker and Haig. Port Dundas whiskies were known for their light, sweet and smooth flavour profile, with notes of vanilla, honey and subtle spices.
Port Dundas closed in 2010 and was later scrapped, but its whiskies remain a prized legacy among enthusiasts and collectors. Distilled in an iconic location and with a rich history, Port Dundas represents an important chapter in the Scotch whisky industry. The distillery may be gone, but the legacy of its exceptional grain whisky lives on in the bottles that are still appreciated for their quality and character.
