Port Dundas 16 years 2008 - 2024
Port Dundas may be a closed distillery, but its legacy lives on with exceptional single grain whiskies like this 16-year-old expression, bottled by independent bottler Signatory Vintage. Distilled in 2008 and bottled in 2024, this whisky has undergone a wonderful maturation in two 2nd fill Oloroso sherry butts. This creates a fascinating combination of sweet, spicy and nutty notes, setting this whisky apart from typical grain whiskies. The sherry influence adds depth and complexity, with hints of dried fruit, caramel and subtle oak spice. A wonderful dram for lovers of single grain whisky with a distinct character.
Tasting note
Nose
Rich and inviting with aromas of dried figs, raisins, and candied orange peel. Sweet notes of caramel, vanilla, and butterscotch are complemented by subtle spicy hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.
Palate
Silky and full-bodied, featuring a rich combination of honeyed malt, milk chocolate, and toasted almonds. The sherry influence brings layers of dried fruit and delicate spice, while a touch of oak provides balance.
Finish
Long and warming, with lingering notes of caramelized nuts, spiced orange, and a hint of dark chocolate. The interplay of sweetness and spice remains perfectly balanced, making for an effortlessly drinkable whisky.
Port Dundas Distillery
Port Dundas Distillery was located in Glasgow, on the banks of the Forth and Clyde Canal, and was founded in 1811. This historic distillery played a crucial role in the production of grain whisky and was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland. Port Dundas merged with nearby Cowlairs Distillery in 1860, significantly increasing its production capacity.
A unique feature of Port Dundas was the use of continuous stills, which enabled efficient and large-scale production of grain whisky. The distillery produced whisky that was used in some of the most famous blends, such as Johnnie Walker and Haig. Port Dundas whiskies were known for their light, sweet and smooth flavour profile, with notes of vanilla, honey and subtle spices.
Port Dundas closed in 2010 and was later scrapped, but its whiskies remain a prized legacy among enthusiasts and collectors. Distilled in an iconic location and with a rich history, Port Dundas represents an important chapter in the Scotch whisky industry. The distillery may be gone, but the legacy of its exceptional grain whisky lives on in the bottles that are still appreciated for their quality and character.
