Tasting notes
Nose
The first thing that stands out is the intense and very present sherry character in this whisky. It's hard to name exactly, but we suspect European oak like the old distilleries used in the 1970s. Think Macallan and Mortlach. Thick spice and hints of caramel. Bitter chocolate and dried plums. Every time we stick our nose in the glass, we are surprised with new scents we discover. A delightful journey of discovery.
Taste
Powerful, spicy and mildly sweet. Wax, leather and wood aromas. The start is sweet and this slowly transitions to dry and more bitter. This whisky was bottled just in time, as the wood has tried hard to overpower. Full-bodied, round, powerful, yet it also has something elegant about it. Blind we wouldn't associate an Edradour with this, but what a bruiser of a whisky. The cask has made this a very mature whisky.
Finish
After the drying on the palate, the slightly sweet character still remains in the finish. Again, a hint of leather and dark chocolate. Sultanas, dried plums and figs are also evident.
