Tasting note

Nose

The nose reveals the profound depth achieved through decades of aging. Aromas of dried fruits—figs, dates, and raisins—are delicately interwoven with beeswax and aged oak. A refined floral hint evokes dried flowers and heather, accompanied by subtle notes of leather and tobacco that lend extra dimension to its complex aroma. A light touch of orange zest and warming spices like cinnamon and clove emerge gently, adding a nuanced layer.

Palate

On the palate, this whisky unfurls in rich, full-bodied splendor, with a silky texture that envelops every taste bud. Deep, warming notes of caramel, honey, and almonds shine through, followed by a sweet trace of toasted oak. The dried fruit from the nose carries through and is enhanced by undertones of dark chocolate and a delicate hint of licorice. The balance between sweet and spicy is remarkable, with new layers of complexity unfolding with each sip.

Finish

The finish is long and warming, leaving a refined smoothness that lingers pleasantly. Hints of old oak and a touch of gentle smokiness mark the closing notes, rounded off with a hint of spice and a final sweet whisper of vanilla. It’s a lingering finish that invites you to savor the whisky’s rich character.

Balblair Distillery

Balblair Distillery is located in the Northern Highlands of Scotland, close to the village of Edderton on the scenic banks of the Dornoch Firth. Founded in 1790 by John Ross, Balblair is one of the oldest active distilleries in Scotland and has a rich history of traditional whisky production.

Balblair whiskies are known for their lively and fruity flavour profiles, with notes of apple, pear, citrus and spice, complemented by a gentle sweetness and vanilla. The whisky is mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which contributes to its elegant and balanced flavours. The combination of historical traditions, carefully selected casks and a focus on optimal maturity makes Balblair a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

Balblair Distillery

Balblair Distillery stands near Edderton in the northern Highlands, overlooking the Dornoch Firth. It was founded in 1790 by John Ross on the estate of the Rosses of Balnagown. His son Andrew and later generations of the Ross family continued the business until the end of the nineteenth century. Inverness wine merchant Alexander Cowan took control in 1894. He modernised Balblair and moved the distillery approximately half a mile to its present site in 1895, closer to the newly established railway.

Economic difficulties halted production in 1911. During the Second World War, the buildings were requisitioned by the British Army and used by Norwegian troops. Distilling resumed under Robert ‘Bertie’ Cumming in 1948. He sold the business to Hiram Walker in 1970, and Balblair has belonged to Inver House Distillers since 1996. The distillery is distinguished by a deliberately unhurried process, including fermentation of around 62 hours and approximately four and a half hours of slow distillation in squat copper stills. In 2007, Balblair adopted a vintage-led bottling range; in 2019 it returned to a permanent collection carrying age statements.
