Banff 36 years 1976 - 2013
Banff is a name that sparks curiosity among whisky enthusiasts. A distillery lost to time—closed in 1983—yet revered for its unique and often elusive character. This Small Batch bottling from Cadenhead, distilled in 1976 and bottled in 2013, stands as a rare echo of that legacy. After 36 years of patient maturation, it delivers depth, elegance, and the quiet power of a whisky that knows its place in history.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Refined and delicately aged. Dried flowers, beeswax, and soft citrus take the lead, followed by notes of apricot, antique books, and a hint of polished wood. There’s a gentle linen-cabinet note that reveals its age. Exquisitely subtle.
Palate
Delicate yet layered. Light tropical fruits—papaya, pineapple—rest on a foundation of malt, soft tannins, and a mineral tension. Hints of ginger, almond, and a waxy texture speak to its extended maturation. A calm yet expressive presence.
Finish
Long, dry, and complex. Nutty, spiced, with a whisper of distant smoke. What remains is finesse—an elegant fade that lingers like a memory you don’t want to lose.
Banff Distillery
Banff Distillery was located near the village of Inverboyndie on the north-east coast of Scotland, close to the town of Banff in Aberdeenshire. Founded in 1824 by James McKilligan & Co, the distillery had a turbulent history with several changes of ownership and multiple incidents, including a devastating fire in 1877 and bombings during World War II. The distillery finally closed in 1983 and the buildings were later demolished.
Although Banff Distillery no longer exists, its remaining bottles remain highly sought after by whisky lovers, collectors and investors alike. Banff's whiskies are prized for their rarity and the unique glimpse they offer into a piece of lost whisky history.
Cadenhead
Cadenhead, known in full as William Cadenhead Ltd, is the world's oldest independent bottler of Scotch whisky. Founded in 1842 in Aberdeen, Scotland, the company is known for its high-quality, authentic whiskies and other spirits. Cadenhead has a long and rich history and enjoys worldwide esteem among whisky lovers and collectors.
History
Cadenhead was founded in 1842 by George Duncan, but soon William Cadenhead, Duncan's brother-in-law, took over the company. Under his leadership, the company grew into a respected name in the whisky trade. Initially known as a wine and spirits merchant, Cadenhead soon developed into a leading bottler of Scotch whisky. In 1972, the company was sold to J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd, the parent company of Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown. This marked a new phase in Cadenhead's history, integrating the company with one of Scotland's best-known distilleries.
