Brora Distillery

Brora Distillery is located in the Scottish Highlands, near the coastal town of Brora in Sutherland. Founded in 1819 by the Marquis of Stafford, the distillery was originally known as Clynelish. In 1968, a new Clynelish Distillery was built next to the original one, which was then renamed Brora. The distillery produced until 1983, after which it closed, but its whiskies from that period have achieved legendary status.

A specific feature of Brora whisky is the use of peated malt during certain periods of production, which resulted in a robust and smoky flavour profile, with notes of sea salt, leather and subtle fruitiness. This unique combination of flavours made Brora whisky highly sought after by whisky lovers, collectors and investors.

In 2021, Diageo reopened Brora Distillery after an extensive restoration. The reopening marks a new era for Brora, with the distillery building on its rich heritage and traditional production methods. Brora's revival brings one of the most respected names in Scotch back into production, to the delight of whisky connoisseurs worldwide.

Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail is one of the most respected and influential independent bottlers in the whisky world. With a history dating back to 1895 and a commitment to quality, craftsmanship and innovation, the company has played a key role in the development and popularisation of single malt whisky. Their extensive portfolio, ranging from rare old whiskies to unique expressions from well-known distilleries, makes Gordon & MacPhail a favourite among whisky collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

History

Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail. It began as a grocery shop in Elgin, selling a wide range of products, including tea, coffee, wine, and spirits. Soon the company focused on whisky, starting by bottling single malts, and one of Gordon & MacPhail's most important contributions to the whisky industry was their vision of maturing whiskies over long periods of time. While many distilleries focused on producing whisky for blends, Gordon & MacPhail saw the potential of single malts and began storing whiskies in their own casks for long-term maturation.

Brora Distillery

Brora Distillery stands in the coastal village of Brora in Sutherland, directly beside Clynelish. It was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford under the name Clynelish. Ainslie & Heilbron and John Risk acquired the business in 1896; through its connection with John Walker & Sons, it joined the Distillers Company Limited in 1925. A larger modern Clynelish distillery was built beside the original site in 1967. The old plant closed briefly, but resumed production in 1969 under the name Brora.

Brora was given a new role producing heavily peated malt for blends, partly because of shortages of Islay whisky and the reconstruction of Caol Ila. Peat levels were gradually reduced from 1973 and the distillery produced several styles before closing in 1983. Its remaining casks later gave Brora cult status. Diageo began a meticulous restoration in 2018. The stillhouse was rebuilt stone by stone and the two original copper stills were refurbished. Spirit flowed again in May 2021 after 38 years. With capacity of around 800,000 litres a year, Brora deliberately remains one of Diageo’s smallest distilleries.

Gordon & MacPhail

Gordon & MacPhail is a Scottish whisky specialist and independent bottler, founded in Elgin in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail. The business began as a grocery shop offering tea, coffee, wine and spirits. John Urquhart joined soon afterwards, and his family continued to develop the company over several generations.

Gordon & MacPhail became renowned for maturing new-make spirit from Scottish distilleries in carefully selected casks of its own. The relationship between distillery character, type of wood and extended maturation has always been central to this approach. This expertise created an exceptional inventory of single malt whisky, including remarkably old and rare bottlings. Introduced in 1968, the Connoisseurs Choice range also played an important part in building international interest in single malt Scotch whisky.

In 1993, the family acquired Benromach Distillery, which reopened in 1998 following extensive restoration. The Cairn Distillery followed later. Gordon & MacPhail thus developed from a shop and bottler into a whisky maker, distillery owner and maturation specialist, with wood remaining a defining influence in every whisky.
