Dalmore Distillery

Dalmore Distillery is located on the northern shore of the Cromarty Firth, in the Scottish Highlands, near the town of Alness. Founded in 1839 by Alexander Matheson, Dalmore has a rich history and is known for its luxurious and complex whiskies.

A unique feature of Dalmore is the use of water from the nearby River Alness, which contributes to the whisky's distinctive flavour profile. Dalmore is famous for its maturation techniques, using a combination of American oak bourbon casks and exclusive sherry casks from bodega Gonzales Byass in Jerez, Spain. This creates deep, rich flavours with layers of chocolate, orange, coffee and spices.

The distillery is also known for its iconic emblem, a 12-pointed Royal Stag, which reflects the legendary background of the Mackenzie clan heritage. Dalmore whiskies are often considered luxurious expressions, with a refined balance and a long, sumptuous finish. This combination of traditional methods, exceptional maturation techniques and rich history makes Dalmore one of the most respected names in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

The Dalmore Distillery stands near Alness on the Cromarty Firth in the northern Highlands. It was founded in 1839 by Sir Alexander Matheson. Brothers Andrew and Charles Mackenzie took control in 1867. They introduced Clan Mackenzie’s twelve-pointed stag as its emblem and established lasting relationships with wine, port and sherry houses. During the First World War, the Royal Navy used the site to manufacture sea mines. Following an explosion and fire, The Dalmore resumed production in 1922. Mackenzie Brothers merged with Whyte & Mackay in 1960, and the distillery remains part of that company.

The Dalmore is distinguished above all by cask selection and multi-cask maturation. Its whisky generally begins in American white oak ex-bourbon casks before further maturation in selected sherry, port and wine casks. The partnership with González Byass has lasted for more than a century. Its copper stills are also unusual, differing in shape and size. Their number increased from four to eight during the 1960s; in 2026 a new stillhouse began distilling with exact replicas of the existing stills. Expansion and preservation of the established spirit character therefore continue side by side.
