Some whiskies are more than just spirits; they are time capsules. This Glen Mhor 24 Years, distilled in 1963 and bottled in the 1980s by the legendary Italian importer Sestante, is exactly that. Glen Mhor, once located in Inverness and long since closed, was known for its distinctive, somewhat idiosyncratic style. Bottled during an era when minimal intervention was the norm, this rare expression offers a rare glimpse into the soul of 1960s Scotch whisky. Tasting Note

Nose

Delicate and layered with aromas of old bookshelves, dried flowers, beeswax and orange zest. Subtle notes of peat smoke, furniture polish and lightly oxidized sherry lend it a beautiful vintage charm.

Palate

Soft, complex and perfectly balanced. Flavours of spiced apple, dried apricots, autumn leaves, gentle smoke and an elegant minerality. Almost ethereal mouthfeel with hints of aged oak and soft waxiness.

Finish

Long, dry and refined. The finish brings spice, old wood and a coastal salinity that fades slowly — like a memory from a bygone era.

Glen Mhor Distillery

Glen Mhor Distillery was located on the banks of the Caledonian Canal in Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1892 by John Birnie and John Mackinlay, Glen Mhor has a rich history that spans more than a century. The distillery was unique for its early adoption of innovations, such as the use of a then rare Saladin box for malting barley.

Glen Mhor whisky was known for its robust and complex flavour profile, often characterised by rich, malty notes and a subtle fruitiness. The distillery used water from nearby Loch Ness, which contributed to the whisky's distinctive flavour. Maturation took place mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a harmonious balance of flavours.

Despite its innovative approach and beloved whiskies, Glen Mhor was closed in 1983 and later demolished. Today, Glen Mhor's remaining bottles are highly sought after by enthusiasts, collectors and investors because of their rarity and the historical value they represent.

Glen Mhor Distillery stood in Inverness between the Caledonian Canal and the railway. It was founded in 1892 by John Birnie, formerly manager of the neighbouring Glen Albyn Distillery, and Leith whisky merchant Charles Mackinlay. Architect Charles Doig designed the complex, and production began in 1894. Its position gave Glen Mhor direct access to both water and rail transport. Mackinlay & Birnie became a limited company in 1906, with John Walker & Sons taking a forty per cent interest. The company acquired Glen Albyn in 1920, bringing both Inverness distilleries under the same ownership.

Glen Mhor remained powered by water unusually late and modernised in 1954 with Saladin box maltings, making malting less labour-intensive. It remained a small operation with only one pair of stills. Some whisky was sold as single malt at an unusually early stage, although most production was intended for Mackinlay blends. The family sold the business to the Distillers Company Limited in 1972. Glen Mhor closed in 1983 during a period of excess capacity and declining demand. Its equipment was dismantled and the buildings were later demolished, with shops eventually built on the site.

Sestante was an influential Italian whisky importer and independent bottler founded by Ernesto Mainardi in Parma. The name refers to Il Sestante, the bar Mainardi opened in 1977 and named after the navigational instrument used by explorers to determine their course. The import company followed in 1979 and developed close relationships with companies including Gordon & MacPhail.

From the mid-1980s, whiskies began to appear under Sestante’s own label. Mainardi selected distinctive single malts from distilleries such as Bowmore, Ardbeg, Laphroaig, Port Ellen, Longmorn and Clynelish. One notable practice was releasing whisky from the same cask at both drinking strength and cask strength, allowing enthusiasts to compare the two presentations directly.

Sestante became recognisable through colourful labels, unusual bottle designs and luxurious crystal decanters. Many releases are now regarded as classics of Italian whisky history. Around the turn of the millennium, the company’s legacy continued through Silver Seal, while the Sestante name was retained for special bottlings within the Sestante Collection.
