Glenesk 1981 #0571 Old Train Line
A real treat for fans of closed distilleries and classic sherry maturation. This Glenesk 1981 was bottled in 2016 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Jack Wiebers Whisky World, as part of the atmospheric Old Train Line series. Aged in a Dark Sherry Cask and bottled at a robust 54.3%, only 160 bottles of this rare whisky were ever released. Glenesk has been silent since 1985 – making this a true gem from the past.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Intense and rich, with aromas of dark raisins, plums, mocha and cigar boxes. Underneath, hints of leather, antique wood and a touch of balsamic glaze.
Palate
Full-bodied and powerful with flavours of PX sherry, dark chocolate, black cherries and candied orange peel. Spicy and warming, with a velvety mouthfeel.
Finish
Long, rich and layered. Soft tannins, espresso, tobacco and lingering notes of sweet oak and dark fruits.
Glenesk Distillery
Glenesk Distillery, originally known as Highland Esk, is located in the Angus region, near the town of Montrose in Scotland. Founded in 1897 by Septimus Parsonage as a brewery, it was converted into a distillery in 1899. Throughout its history, the distillery has had different names and owners, including North Esk and Montrose.
In the 1960s, the distillery was significantly modernised and the name was changed to Glenesk. Glenesk whiskies were known for their smooth and complex character, with notes of fruit, flowers and a subtle spiciness.
Despite its rich history, Glenesk was closed in 1985 and later demolished. Today, Glenesk's remaining bottles are highly sought after by aficionados, collectors and investors because of their rarity and historical value. Glenesk remains a fascinating part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the unique and refined whiskies it produced.
