Sometimes you don’t just taste whisky — you taste history. Glen Esk — also known in earlier days as Hillside or North Esk — is a silent Highland distillery whose remaining traces now belong to the past. This exceptional Blackadder Raw Cask bottling was distilled in 1983 and aged for 28 years before being bottled in 2012 from cask number 4929. Unfiltered, uncoloured and full of character: a true liquid time capsule.

Tasting Note

Nose

A rich, classic nose with aromas of old leather, beeswax, dried apricots and spicy oak. Notes of honey, orange peel and a hint of tobacco follow.

Palate

Silky and complex with flavours of butterscotch, walnuts, raisins and an elegant spiciness of nutmeg and bay leaf. A subtle mineral touch adds extra depth.

Finish

Long and layered with notes of candied fruit, soft smoke, dry herbs and a hint of dark chocolate. A finish that deserves a quiet moment of appreciation.

Glenesk Distillery

Glenesk Distillery, originally known as Highland Esk, is located in the Angus region, near the town of Montrose in Scotland. Founded in 1897 by Septimus Parsonage as a brewery, it was converted into a distillery in 1899. Throughout its history, the distillery has had different names and owners, including North Esk and Montrose.

In the 1960s, the distillery was significantly modernised and the name was changed to Glenesk. Glenesk whiskies were known for their smooth and complex character, with notes of fruit, flowers and a subtle spiciness.

Despite its rich history, Glenesk was closed in 1985 and later demolished. Today, Glenesk's remaining bottles are highly sought after by aficionados, collectors and investors because of their rarity and historical value. Glenesk remains a fascinating part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the unique and refined whiskies it produced.

Blackadder

Blackadder is an independent bottler of whisky, founded in 1995 by Robin Tucek. The company is known for its pure approach to bottling whisky, emphasising the preservation of the whisky's natural flavour and quality. Blackadder has earned a special reputation in the whisky world, especially for their signature ‘Raw Cask’ bottlings.

Raw Cask Series

Blackadder's most famous and unique series is the ‘Raw Cask’ series. In these bottlings, the whisky remains completely natural, and there may even be small particles of wood or charcoal present in the bottle, from the cask in which the whisky was matured. This is one of the features that make Blackadder unique, and it reflects the company's commitment to preserving the whisky's original state.

Glenesk Distillery stood near Hillside, just north of Montrose on the eastern coast of Angus. The business began in 1897 as Highland Esk, when wine and spirit merchant James Isles converted a former flax mill into a malt distillery. Following rapid changes of ownership, it was renamed North Esk in 1899. Production stopped during the First World War, and after a fire in 1919 the site operated solely as a maltings for almost two decades.

Joseph Hobbs acquired the business in 1938 and converted it into a grain distillery under the name Montrose. After the Distillers Company Limited took control in 1953, production remained intermittent until the plant was converted back to malt whisky in 1964 and renamed Hillside. A large drum maltings was added in the late 1960s and later expanded. The final name change came in 1980, when Hillside became Glenesk. Whisky production ended permanently five years later. The distillery buildings disappeared during the 1990s, but the maltings remained active. Glenesk is exceptional for its repeated changes between malt and grain production, its many identities and its continuing legacy as a supplier of malt.

Blackadder International is an independent, family-run bottler founded in 1995 by whisky experts Robin Tucek and John Lamond. The pair had previously co-written The Malt Whisky File, an influential reference work for enthusiasts. The Blackadder name refers to the seventeenth-century Scottish preacher John Blackadder, who managed to evade the authorities for several years.

From the beginning, the company followed a traditional approach. Blackadder bottles exclusively single cask whiskies, usually at cask strength, without chill filtration or added colouring. Its motto, ‘The Cask is King’, perfectly captures this philosophy: the cask and the whisky’s original character are allowed to speak for themselves.

In 2000, Blackadder introduced Raw Cask, the range for which it became best known. These whiskies are bottled almost directly from the cask, with fine cask particles and natural oils sometimes remaining in the bottle. Blackadder has also released distinctive ranges such as Peat Reek, Smoking Islay, Black Snake and Red Snake. Through this uncompromising style, the company has secured a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate characterful, unpolished whisky.
