Tasting note
Nose
The first inhale of this outstanding whisky welcomes you with a rich bouquet of ripe autumnal fruits and a subtle hint of dry oak notes. Depth is created by the gentle hint of malt and a whisper of peat smoke, creating a complex and seductive aroma that invites further exploration.
Taste
On the palet, Glenlochy Rare Old reveals its true character. Harmonious flavours of dark chocolate and almond marzipan mingle with the fruitiness of fresh figs and a hint of dried apricots. These rich and full flavour sensations are perfectly balanced by a delicate spiciness and the warmth of glazed ginger.
Finish
The finish of this refined whisky is long and persistent, with the sweeter notes slowly giving way to a dry, elegant oak finish and hints of leather and antique wood; a reflection of the many years of rest in the cask. Each sip invites reflection on the timeless journey this whisky has taken from cask to glass.
Glenlochy Distillery
Glenlochy Distillery was located in the town of Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1898 by David McAndie during the 'whisky boom', Glenlochy had an eventful history with several closures and re-openings, before finally closing for good in 1983.
A specific feature of Glenlochy was the production of a classic Highland single malt whisky, characterised by its robust and complex flavour profile. The whiskies were known for their rich notes of malt, honey and a subtle spiciness. Glenlochy used water from the nearby River Nevis, which contributed to the purity and uniqueness of their whisky.
The whisky matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a balanced and deep flavour. Although the distillery is now closed and the buildings have been repurposed, the remaining bottles of Glenlochy remain highly sought after by aficionados, collectors and investors due to their rarity and historical value. Glenlochy remains a respected part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the exceptional quality of its single malts.
Gordon & MacPhail
Gordon & MacPhail is one of the most respected and influential independent bottlers in the whisky world. With a history dating back to 1895 and a commitment to quality, craftsmanship and innovation, the company has played a key role in the development and popularisation of single malt whisky. Their extensive portfolio, ranging from rare old whiskies to unique expressions from well-known distilleries, makes Gordon & MacPhail a favourite among whisky collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
History
Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail. It began as a grocery shop in Elgin, selling a wide range of products, including tea, coffee, wine, and spirits. Soon the company focused on whisky, starting by bottling single malts, and one of Gordon & MacPhail's most important contributions to the whisky industry was their vision of maturing whiskies over long periods of time. While many distilleries focused on producing whisky for blends, Gordon & MacPhail saw the potential of single malts and began storing whiskies in their own casks for long-term maturation.
