Glenmorangie Finealta

Glenmorangie Finealta reveals a rare, lightly smoky side of this Highland distillery. Maturation in American white oak and Oloroso sherry casks brings citrus, vanilla and dried fruit together with gentle smoke and warming spices.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Orange peel, lemon and ripe peach are followed by vanilla, honey and raisins. Gentle peat smoke, toasted nuts and a touch of leather give the nose a surprisingly rich and layered character.

Palate

Creamy and rich with candied citrus, caramel and dried fruit. Cinnamon, nutmeg and toasted almonds are joined by subtle smoke, spiced oak and a gently drying sherry influence.

Finish

Long and warming with citrus, gentle smoke, malt and warm spices. Vanilla, nuts and lightly drying oak linger beautifully.

Finealta was released in 2010 as the second bottling in the Glenmorangie Private Edition series. It was inspired by a lightly peated Glenmorangie style dating back to 1903, which was served at London’s Savoy Hotel.

Glenmorangie Distillery

Glenmorangie Distillery is located in Tain, Ross-shire, on the east coast of the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1843 by William Matheson, Glenmorangie has a long and rich history in whisky production. The distillery is located near the Dornoch Firth, which provides a unique source of pure water, essential to the production process.

A specific feature of Glenmorangie is the use of the tallest copper pot stills in Scotland, which are over five metres high. These stills produce an exceptionally pure and delicate spirit. Glenmorangie is known for its innovative approach to barrel maturation, using a wide range of cask types including ex-bourbon, sherry and wine casks. This results in complex and rich flavour profiles.

Glenmorangie whiskies are loved for their smooth and fruity character, with notes of vanilla, honey, and citrus. The distillery remains a pioneer in the whisky world, with a strong focus on quality and craftsmanship, keeping Glenmorangie one of the most respected names in the world of single malt whisky.

Glenmorangie Distillery

Glenmorangie Distillery stands near Tain on the Dornoch Firth in the northern Highlands. William Matheson founded it in 1843 within a former brewery and installed second-hand stills originally used for gin. Their exceptional height permanently shaped the distillery’s production system. In 1918, Glenmorangie passed to Macdonald & Muir, which guided the business through difficult periods of war, Prohibition and economic crisis. Moët Hennessy acquired Glenmorangie in 2004, making it part of LVMH.

Glenmorangie is distinguished by Scotland’s tallest copper stills, whose necks rise to 5.14 metres. Their height and substantial reflux ensure that mainly the lightest alcohol vapours reach the condenser. The distillery also became highly influential in cask maturation. From the 1980s, it was an important pioneer of additional maturation in wine, sherry and port casks. The Lighthouse opened on the site in 2021 as a self-contained experimental distillery, allowing trials involving barley, yeast, mashing and adjustable stills without interrupting regular Glenmorangie production.
