Glenury Royal 36 years 1970 - 2007
Founded in 1825 by Robert Barclay, the distillery took its name from the valley running through the Ury district. Just weeks after opening, a major fire destroyed the stocks of barley along with the kiln and parts of the malt floor. Glenury Royal's malt floors were closed in 1968. The distillery then continued to produce malt whisky for almost two more decades, but finally shut down in May 1985. In 1992, the owners decided to sell the distillery and 1 year later this happened. A real estate company became the owner and created flats on the site where the distillery first stood. This makes Glenury Royal one of the closed distilleries.
Origin and bottling
This very rare 36-year-old Glenury Royal is made from Single Malt Whisky distilled in the year 1970 and is the third in the series of Diageo Special Releases from this long-closed distillery. It is a particularly interesting comparison to the earlier bottling of Glenury Royal 1968 also released as a 36-year-old version. Only 1926 bottles of this special bottling were released worldwide.
Cask type
Rumours tell us that these are exclusively First Fill Bourbon Barrels, but Diageo would not confirm this.
Tasting note
Colour
Ochre yellow
Nose
We're talking about a delicious fruit basket filled with red apples and sweet pears. In addition, fresh ginger and roses. Very refined and the 36-year ageing has turned all the sharp edges into sultry scents.
Taste
The wood is definitely present, but not intrusive. A nice oily texture and flavours of honey, flowers and biscuit spices give character to this old lady.
Finish
Not overly long, but the high alcohol leaves a powerful, slightly sweet taste on the palate
Overall impression
It is always special to taste something from a distillery that no longer exists. That it is then also a delicious whisky only makes it all the more wonderful.
This Glenury Royal 36 years 1970 - 2007 gets an average score on WhiskyBase of 91.65/100 points
