Lochside 47 years 1965 - 2012 #6779

Lochside is a name that sparks excitement among whisky connoisseurs. This majestic 47-year-old release, bottled by Adelphi, is a testament to time, craft and heritage. Distilled in 1965 and drawn from sherry cask #6779 in 2012, it represents a vanished distillery with a powerful legacy. With the distillery closed since 1992, this whisky is not just rare—it’s a piece of history captured in a bottle, offering depth, grace and nostalgia.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Incredibly layered and rich. Notes of old leather, polished wood, apricot preserve, beeswax and cigar box. Floral undertones and antique book scent add refinement.

Palate

Silky and profoundly complex. Dried fruits, roasted nuts, dark honey, elegant spice and a hint of orange zest. Balanced and full of finesse.

Finish

Exceptionally long and warming. Delicate smoke, aged oak, nutmeg and a whisper of coastal salinity linger beautifully.

Lochside Distillery

Lochside Distillery was located in Montrose, on the east coast of Scotland. Founded in 1957 by Joseph Hobbs, the distillery was located in a former brewery building dating back to 1781. Lochside produced both single malt and grain whisky, a rarity in the whisky world.

A specific feature of Lochside was the production of both types of whisky, allowing them to make their own blends. The distillery traditionally used spring water from the nearby Lochside Well, which contributed to the purity and character of their whiskies. Lochside whiskies were known for their light, tropical-fruity flavour profiles, with notes of apple, pear, vanilla and a subtle spiciness.

The whiskies were mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a balanced and refined flavour. Despite its closure in 1992 and subsequent demolition in 2005, Lochside's remaining bottles remain highly sought after by enthusiasts, collectors and investors due to their rarity and historical value. Lochside remains a fascinating chapter in Scotch whisky history, remembered for the unique and high-quality whiskies it produced.

Adelphi Distillery Limited

Adelphi Distillery Limited is an independent bottler of mainly Scotch Single Malt whiskies, known for its high quality and limited editions. Besides Scotch whisky, they sometimes make forays into other whisky countries, but rum and armagnac can also be found in Adelphi Distillery Limited's portfolio. The company has a rich history dating back to the 19th century and is today a respected name in the whisky world.

History and Origins

  • Establishment: The original Adelphi Distillery was founded in 1826 in the Gorbals, a district in Glasgow, Scotland. The distillery produced a wide range of whiskies, both single malts and grain whiskies.
  • Closure and revival: The original distillery closed in the early 20th century. In the 1990s, the Adelphi name was revived by Jamie Walker, a descendant of the original owners. Since then, Adelphi has focused on bottling high-quality, rare spirits.

Lochside Distillery

Lochside Distillery stood in Montrose on the eastern coast of Angus. The site began as a brewery and received its distinctive white tower in 1899, designed by Charles Doig. When the brewery closed in 1957, Canadian entrepreneur Joseph Hobbs acquired the property and converted it into a whisky distillery. He first installed a Coffey still for grain whisky and added four copper pot stills for malt production in 1961. Lochside consequently became one of the rare Scottish sites capable of producing both types of whisky.

Hobbs went further by combining young malt and grain spirit immediately after distillation for the Sandy Macnab blend, a practice that became known as ‘blending at birth’. This method ended after his death in 1964. His son sold Lochside to Spain’s Destilerías y Crianza del Whisky in 1973, after which grain production ceased and the malt was used mainly for DYC and Sandy Macnab. An official 10-year-old single malt appeared in 1987. Production ended in 1992 following the takeover by Allied Distillers. The buildings were later demolished; since 2005, only the increasingly scarce whisky has remained.

Adelphi Distillery Limited

Adelphi Distillery Limited ranks among Scotland’s most respected independent whisky bottlers. Its name reaches back to the original Adelphi Distillery, built in Glasgow beside the River Clyde by brothers Charles and David Gray in 1826. After a period under Archibald Walker & Co, production eventually came to an end. In 1993, Jamie Walker, a great-grandson of Archibald Walker, revived the Adelphi name as an independent bottler.

Adelphi is renowned for its exceptionally strict cask selection. Only a small proportion of the casks assessed are considered worthy of bottling, with character, balance, maturation and provenance taking priority. The range consists mainly of rare single cask whiskies and small-batch limited editions sourced from a variety of Scottish distilleries. Each Adelphi bottling therefore offers an individual snapshot of a distillery, a cask and its maturation.

Adelphi gained new owners in 2004 and returned to distilling in 2014 with the opening of Ardnamurchan Distillery in the western Highlands. In doing so, the company connects almost two centuries of whisky history with a modern and uncompromising approach to quality.
