Lagg Kilmory

Lagg Kilmory is the first official release from Lagg Distillery, the new and proud peated whisky producer on the Isle of Arran. Where Arran Distillery is known for its elegant and fruity style, Lagg dives deep into the world of peat smoke and robust flavours. Named after the village of Kilmory, near the distillery, this whisky is an exciting introduction to a new vision of the rich tradition of Scotch whiskies. With its distinct character and youthful energy, Lagg Kilmory is a promise of great things to come.

Tasting note

Nose

The nose opens with a hearty wave of peat smoke, complemented by aromas of citrus, green apple and a hint of lemongrass. Underneath are subtle hints of honey, spices and a slight maritime saltiness that gives the whisky a real island character.

Taste

The first sip is an exciting adventure. The peat smoke is immediate and powerful, but at the same time nicely integrated with a lively palette of fresh citrus, juicy pear and a hint of white pepper. As the flavours develop, soft notes of vanilla, toasted nuts and a hint of anise emerge. The texture is slightly oily, giving a pleasant mouthfeel.

Finish

The finish is medium-long, with a lingering smokiness and a freshness reminiscent of sea air and citrus.

Lagg Distillery

Lagg Distillery is located on the southern tip of the Isle of Arran, on the west coast of Scotland. Opened in 2019, Lagg Distillery is a modern addition to the island's rich whisky tradition. It is the second distillery of Isle of Arran Distillers, which also operates the well-known Arran Distillery in Lochranza.

A specific feature of Lagg Distillery is its focus on heavily peated whiskies, offering a contrast to the lighter style of the original Arran whiskies. The distillery uses locally sourced peat and traditional copper pot stills to create a deep, smoky flavour.

Lagg whisky is matured in a mix of American oak bourbon casks and European sherry casks, creating a rich and complex flavour. Lagg whiskies are known for their robust character, with pronounced notes of smoke, earthy influences and subtle hints of fruit and spices.

The combination of traditional techniques and a modern approach makes Lagg Distillery an exciting new player in the Scotch whisky world.

Lagg Distillery

Lagg Distillery stands near Kilmory on the southern side of the Isle of Arran. Its name recalls an area with a long history of both legal and illicit whisky production; an earlier distillery at Lagg had already closed in 1840. The modern distillery was created by Isle of Arran Distillers, the company behind Lochranza Distillery. Construction began in 2017, the custom-made copper stills were installed in 2018, and the first middle cut of spirit was collected on 19 March 2019. Lagg officially opened its doors a few months later.

Lagg was developed as the distinctly smoky counterpart to the fruity, unpeated Arran whisky made at Lochranza. Its production uses water from the distillery’s own borehole, malted barley, yeast and peat from Aberdeenshire. This peat gives an aromatic, woody smoke that is powerful yet leaves room for sweet fruit, citrus, vanilla and malt. Four traditional wooden washbacks and double distillation in copper pot stills help create a rich, characterful spirit. Lagg therefore represents a modern, heavily peated Island single malt with a surprisingly soft and balanced side.
