Scapa 16 years ‘the’ Orcadian
Scapa 16 years The Orcadian is an exceptional single malt whisky from the Scapa distillery, one of the northernmost distilleries in Scotland, located in the Orkney Islands. Scapa is distinguished by its mild, honeyed style and absence of heavy peat smoke, making it unique among island whiskies. The Scapa 16 Year Old has matured in American oak casks, resulting in a smooth and round whisky with a balance of sweetness and light maritime influences. This edition was launched as a tribute to the rugged, maritime character of the Orkney Islands and the distillery's refined style.
Tasting note
Nose
The nose opens soft and inviting with notes of honey, vanilla, and ripe fruits such as peach and juicy pear. There are subtle hints of citrus and a light floral touch reminiscent of heather flowers. There is also a fine maritime saltiness that adds depth to the aroma and alludes to Orkney's coastal influences.
Taste
Full and silky on the palate, with a rich honey sweetness that is perfectly balanced with fruity notes of apple and apricot. Light notes of oak and a gentle spiciness of cinnamon also emerge. The palate is nicely rounded and offers a hint of creamy vanilla, which comes from the American oak casks. Maritime influences are subtly present, giving it a slightly salty and mineral character, without being overwhelming.
Finish
Long and smooth, with a lingering sweetness of honey and a subtle hint of salty freshness. The finish is elegant and refined, with a hint of citrus and a soft, spicy tone that slowly fades.
Scapa Distillery
Scapa Distillery is located on the scenic Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, north of mainland Scotland. Founded in 1885 by John Townsend, Scapa has a long and varied history, with multiple ownership transfers and periods of non-production.
A unique feature of Scapa Distillery is the use of a Lomond wash still, a rare type of still that produces a smoother and fruitier spirit. Scapa is one of the few distilleries still using this technique, which contributes to the distinctive flavour profiles of their whiskies.
Scapa whiskies are known for their smooth and approachable character, often described as light and delicate with subtle maritime influences such as a hint of sea salt. Maturation takes place mainly in American oak bourbon casks, which creates rich notes of vanilla and caramel. The combination of traditional methods and the unique influence of the Orkney environment makes Scapa Distillery a popular name in the world of Scotch whisky.
