Description

Torabhaig may be a newcomer on the Isle of Skye, but it's already turning heads with its bold, maritime single malts. "The Sound of Sleat" is part of their Legacy Series and offers a compelling glimpse into the house style: heavily peated, yet refined. Matured in new American oak (Quercus Alba) and ex-bourbon casks, this expression captures both raw coastal power and elegant complexity. It’s a modern island whisky with an old soul.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Smoke from damp campfire wood, citrus peel, cracked black pepper and a whiff of sea breeze. Soft malt and vanilla linger underneath.

Palate

Bold and smoky. Grilled lemon, sweet barley, white pepper and earthy peat come together over a creamy bourbon cask base.

Finish

Long and lightly briny. Lingering smoke, hints of liquorice and a touch of lemon zest round things off beautifully.

Torabhaig Distillery

Torabhaig Distillery is located on the east coast of the Isle of Skye, Scotland, in the picturesque village of Teangue. Opened in 2017, it is only the second legal distillery on Skye, after Talisker. The distillery is located in a beautifully restored 19th-century farmhouse, adding to its historic charm and connection to local heritage.

A specific feature of Torabhaig Distillery is the use of local spring water and Scottish barley, ensuring an authentic taste experience. The distillery produces medium to heavily peated whiskies, which are characterised by their robust and complex flavour profiles. Torabhaig whiskies have distinct notes of smoke, sea salt and citrus, with a subtle sweetness and spiciness.

The whisky is matured in a mix of American oak bourbon casks and European oak sherry casks, which contributes to the depth and complexity of the flavours. The combination of traditional production methods, a unique location and commitment to quality makes Torabhaig Distillery a promising newcomer to the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

Torabhaig Distillery

Torabhaig Distillery stands near Teangue on the Sleat Peninsula in the south of the Isle of Skye. The distillery occupies a carefully restored nineteenth-century farm steading, parts of which were built with stone from nearby Caisteal Chamuis. The original vision came from Sir Iain Noble, after which Mossburn Distillers continued the project. Renovation began in 2014 and the first spirit flowed from the stills in January 2017. Torabhaig consequently became only the second legal single malt distillery on Skye and the first new one since Talisker was founded in 1830.

Torabhaig focuses entirely on peated whisky, while deliberately seeking refinement rather than sheer power. The distillery describes its house style as ‘smoke with taste’: aromatic peat smoke combined with citrus, fruit, malt, spice and maritime notes. Unhurried production, Douglas fir washbacks and specially designed copper pot stills help create a powerful yet elegant spirit. The first single malt appeared in 2021 as the opening chapter of the Legacy Series, documenting the gradual development towards a mature Torabhaig 10 Year Old.
