The Big Peat's Finest 2016 - 2024 (#DL18756) is a distinctive whisky from Douglas Laing's popular Big Peat range, known for its smoky Islay-style whiskies. This edition was distilled in 2016 and matured for eight years before being bottled in 2024. It was matured in Jamaican rum casks, adding a unique twist to the classic Big Peat profile. This bottling is part of the Foundations Collection, created exclusively for La Maison du Whisky.
Tasting note
Nose
The nose opens with the familiar smokiness of Islay, but the influence of the Jamaican Rum cask adds an extra layer of tropical sweetness. You can expect aromas of roasted pineapple, banana, and a hint of molasses, mixed with briny sea air and peat smoke.
Taste
At the first sip, classic Big Peat peat smoke and ashy notes emerge, but these are subtly intertwined with rum notes. There is an intriguing balance between sweet and salty, with flavours of caramel, sugar syrup, ripe tropical fruits, and a hint of vanilla, which combine with the intensity of smoky peat and black pepper.
Finish
The finish is long and warming, with lingering influences of peat and a sweet undertone of rum. The fruitiness lingers, as does a hint of spice and a hint of salted toffee.
