Bunnahabhain Staoisha 9 years 2014 - 2024
Bunnahabhain Staoisha is known for its powerful, smoky character and is crafted with passion on the Isle of Islay. This special expression has matured in dechar/rechar hogsheads, adding an extra layer of complexity to the aging process. These casks enhance the whisky with deep, rich flavors where smoke, sweetness, and spice intertwine beautifully. Cask numbers 10685, 10693, 10722, and 10740 have each contributed their unique characteristics, resulting in a well-balanced and intriguing whisky.
Tasting Notes
Nose
An explosion of peat smoke greets you, intertwined with hints of burnt sugar and toasted oak. Beneath this, a subtle freshness of citrus and salty sea air emerges, reminiscent of a stormy day on the Islay coast. Notes of dark chocolate and a touch of vanilla add a sweet nuance to the overall profile.
Taste
Rich and full-bodied, with an intense smokiness that immediately fills the mouth. The influence of the casks shines through with flavors of caramelized nuts, spicy oak, and a hint of cinnamon. Soft honey and ripe pear provide a pleasant balance, while a light peppery kick adds an exciting twist.
Finish
Long and warming, with a lingering smokiness that gradually blends into sweet toffee and a touch of dried fruit. A whisper of sea salt remains, along with a subtle spiciness that gives the whisky a beautifully layered character.
Bunnahabhain Distillery
Bunnahabhain Distillery is located on the remote north coast of the island of Islay, at the mouth of the river Margadale. Founded in 1881 by the Islay Distillery Company, Bunnahabhain stands out for its unique approach to whisky production on this island known for its peat-smoked whiskies.
A specific feature of Bunnahabhain is that it produces mainly unpeated whiskies, unlike most other Islay distilleries. This results in a smooth, complex whisky with subtle maritime influences. Bunnahabhain whiskies are known for their elegant flavour profile, with notes of fruit, nuts and a slight saltiness.
The peated Bunnahabhain single malts are marketed under names such as Toiteach A Dhà, Staoisha, Moine and are also very well received among aficionados.
The distillery uses water from the Margadale Spring and matures its whiskies in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, creating rich and versatile aromas. Bunnahabhain whiskies are often described as smooth and approachable, with a distinctive refinement.
With a strong emphasis on traditional production methods and a commitment to quality, Bunnahabhain remains a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.
