Caol Ila 10 years 2014 - 2025 Benchmark
Caol Ila, located on the northeast coast of Islay, is famed for its refined and accessible peated style. This 10-year-old release from the Benchmark series underwent a unique double finish: In Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and in Amarone wine casks. The result is a rare interplay of peat smoke, rich wine sweetness and deep fruit character. Bottled at 53.1%, it delivers both power and elegance in perfect harmony.
Tasting Notes
Nose
Gentle smoke mingles with dark grapes, raisins and red berries. Aromas of leather, damp earth and spiced chocolate emerge. A hint of sea salt and orange peel adds freshness.
Palate
Rounded and intense with a compelling balance of sweet and smoky. Flavours of dried fruits, plum and cherry compote meet BBQ smoke, spice and dark chocolate. The Amarone influence lends a vinous depth.
Finish
Long and layered with lingering peat, soft tannins and a warm afterglow of dark fruit, toasted oak and a touch of caramel.
Caol Ila Distillery
Caol Ila Distillery is located on the picturesque east coast of the island of Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay, a strait that separates Islay from Jura. Founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson, the distillery has a rich history and is the largest distillery on Islay.
A specific feature of Caol Ila is the production of both peated and unpeated single malts. The distillery is particularly famous for its heavily peated whiskies with elegant, maritime influences. The whiskies often have a distinctive flavour profile with notes of smoke, sea salt, citrus, and a subtle sweetness.
Caol Ila traditionally uses copper pot stills and water from nearby Loch nam Ban. The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which contributes to the smooth, balanced flavours.
With its unique combination of tradition, craftsmanship and distinctive flavour profile, Caol Ila remains a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.
