Description

Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr

Laphroaig An Cuan Mòr is an intriguing and slightly more refined take on the iconic Islay style. Produced by Laphroaig Distillery, this whisky is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and European oak, adding extra depth and a distinct maritime character. The name An Cuan Mòr translates to “the big harbour” in Gaelic, referencing the distillery’s dramatic coastal location on Islay. Expect unmistakable Laphroaig peat smoke, but with added sweetness, structure and balance.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Powerful peat smoke with iodine and seaweed, followed by sweet vanilla, honey and lightly toasted oak. Subtle citrus notes, gentle spice and a salty sea breeze emerge beneath.

Palate

Full-bodied and smoky with clear medicinal notes, supported by creamy vanilla, malty sweetness and a lightly spiced oak influence. The European oak adds structure and a touch of dryness that contrasts nicely with the sweeter bourbon cask character.

Finish

Long and expressive with lingering smoke, coastal salinity, soft spices and a dry, warming close.

Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig Distillery is located on the south coast of the island of Islay, right on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1815 by Donald and Alexander Johnston, Laphroaig has a long and rich history of producing some of the most distinctive and beloved Islay whiskies.

A specific characteristic of Laphroaig is its distinct peat smoke and medicinal flavour, which gives the whiskies their unique and recognisable character. The distillery traditionally uses copper pot stills and dries the barley over peat fire, creating the distinctive smoke and iodine aromas. Laphroaig whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which contributes to the balance of sweet and smoky flavours.

Laphroaig whiskies are famous for their complex flavour profile, with notes of seaweed, medicinal smoke, salt, and a subtle sweetness. The robust and powerful flavour, combined with a long, warm finish, makes Laphroaig a favourite among heavily peated whisky lovers. Its unique location, traditional production methods and distinctive flavour profile make Laphroaig an iconic name in the world of single malt whisky

Laphroaig Distillery

Laphroaig Distillery stands in a sheltered bay on the southern coast of Islay, between Port Ellen and Lagavulin. The distillery was founded in 1815 by brothers Donald and Alexander Johnston. The Johnston family remained closely involved with the business for more than a century. An important period began under Ian Hunter, the last Johnston to lead Laphroaig. He modernised the distillery and encouraged the use of American ex-bourbon casks. After his death in 1954, Laphroaig passed to Bessie Williamson, who further developed the brand internationally and became a pioneering figure in Scotch whisky.

Laphroaig is renowned for one of Islay’s most distinctive house styles. Part of the barley is still processed on traditional malting floors and smoked over locally cut peat. Water comes from the Kilbride Stream, while slow distillation and a carefully selected middle cut help shape the characterful spirit. The whisky combines powerful peat smoke with notes of iodine, tar, seaweed, herbs, vanilla and a recognisable medicinal freshness. This unconventional balance has made Laphroaig a favourite among enthusiasts of intensely smoky Islay single malt whisky.
