Littlemill Distillery

Littlemill Distillery was located in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, near the banks of the River Clyde in Scotland. Founded in 1772, Littlemill was one of the oldest registered distilleries in the country. The distillery had a rich and varied history with several ownership changes until it closed permanently in 1994. A fire in 2004 completely destroyed the distillery.

A specific feature of Littlemill was the use of both traditional pot stills and Lomond stills, which allowed for a wide range of whisky profiles. Littlemill whisky was known for its light and elegant style, often with fruity and floral notes, combined with a subtle maltiness. The whisky was matured in various cask types, including bourbon and sherry casks, which created a complex flavour profile.

Although the distillery no longer exists, the remaining bottles of Littlemill whisky remain highly prized and sought after by collectors, as a tribute to an important piece of Scotch whisky history.

History

Hart Brothers was founded in the 1960s by Iain and Donald Hart. The brothers had long experience in the drinks industry and decided to use their expertise to establish an independent bottler that would focus on selecting and bottling exceptional Scotch whiskies.

The company has always remained in family hands and has maintained its focus on quality and craftsmanship over the years. Hart Brothers is proud of its tradition and continues to operate according to the values laid down by its founders.

Littlemill Distillery stood at Bowling on the River Clyde, close to the traditional boundary between the Lowlands and Highlands. The site began as a brewery on the Auchentorlie Estate, acquired by Archibald Buchanan in 1750. Littlemill used 1772 as its founding date; archive records show that employee Robert Muir received a licence to sell excisable liquor in November 1773. In 1823, Jane MacGregor became one of the earliest female licence holders in the Scotch whisky industry. Following a rebuild in 1875 and a temporary closure in 1929, an unusually innovative period began in 1931 under American chemist Duncan Thomas.

Thomas changed production from triple to double distillation, introduced a redesigned Saladin malting system and installed hybrid copper stills fitted with rectifying columns. This allowed Littlemill to create three distinct malts: the light Lowland style Littlemill, the heavily peated Dumbuck and the fuller-bodied Dunglass. The distillery closed permanently in 1994, was largely dismantled in 1997 and lost its remaining structures to fire in 2004. The surviving casks are now managed by Loch Lomond Group.

Hart Brothers is a Scottish independent bottler with roots in the licensed trade of the late nineteenth century. The family worked as publicans and drinks merchants in Paisley, near Glasgow. In 1964, brothers Iain and Donald Hart formally established the company as a wine and spirits wholesaler and blender of Scotch whisky.

Their brother Alistair joined in 1975. Drawing on his experience as a blender, he became responsible for sourcing distinctive casks of malt whisky and allowing them to mature further. The focus gradually shifted towards rare single cask releases from both famous and less frequently seen Scottish distilleries. Mature single grain whisky also became an important part of the range.

Hart Brothers bottles each cask only after careful assessment by its tasting panel. Most single malts are released at cask strength, while others are bottled at a minimum of 46%. No colouring is added and the whisky is not chill filtered. This traditional presentation allows the individual character of spirit, cask and maturation to remain clearly recognisable.
