Description

Aberlour 18 Years 50cl

Aberlour is a Speyside name you almost automatically associate with sherry richness, warmth and a comforting style. The 18 Years is the more mature expression of that character: deeper, more rounded oak and a well-balanced mix of fruit, sweetness and spice. In a 50cl bottle it’s also a great way to enjoy something special without committing to a full-sized bottle. Expect a rich, smooth Speyside whisky with dried fruit, orange, chocolate, nuts and warming spice.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Rich and inviting with raisins, dried apricot and orange peel. Toffee, milk chocolate and walnut follow, supported by warm oak and hints of cinnamon and clove.

Palate

Rounded and rich with sherry notes of dried fruit, caramel and gentle honeyed sweetness. Cocoa and nuttiness add depth, followed by spiced oak and a touch of orange that keeps it lively.

Finish

Long and warming with lingering chocolate, dried fruit and gentle spice. It fades slightly dry with oak and a warm fruity note.

Aberlour Distillery

Aberlour Distillery sits in the heart of Speyside, at the meeting point of the River Lour and the River Spey, in the picturesque village of Aberlour. Founded in 1826 by James Gordon and Peter Weir, the distillery was later rebuilt in 1879 by James Fleming after a devastating fire. Fleming, known for his philanthropic work, left a lasting mark on the local community.

One distinctive element of Aberlour is its use of pure spring water drawn from the nearby Ben Rinnes area, which helps shape the clarity and character of the spirit. Aberlour whiskies are celebrated for their rich, layered profiles, often showing fruit, chocolate and gentle spice. Maturation typically involves a combination of ex bourbon and ex sherry casks, adding depth and complexity over time.

The range includes a variety of single malts, including the well known A’bunadh, famous for its intensity and bold sherry influence. With its beautiful setting, strong heritage and consistently high quality releases, Aberlour has earned a respected place in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

Aberlour Distillery

Aberlour Distillery stands in the heart of Speyside, where the Lour Burn meets the River Spey. The present distillery was founded in 1879 by James Fleming, a local grain merchant, banker and benefactor. His motto, ‘Let the deed show’, remains an important part of Aberlour’s identity. Fleming sold the business to Robert Thorne & Sons in 1892. A major fire destroyed much of the distillery and its whisky stocks in 1898. Under the direction of architect Charles Doig, the complex was rebuilt later that same year.

Following further changes of ownership, S. Campbell & Son acquired Aberlour in 1945. The number of copper stills increased from two to four in 1973, and Pernod Ricard purchased the parent company one year later. Aberlour is now managed by Chivas Brothers. The distillery is distinguished by its long-established expertise in cask maturation. Alongside American oak, it uses specially made Spanish oak casks prepared to its own specifications with Oloroso sherry. This approach forms the foundation of both the Double Cask range and A’bunadh, the cask-strength expression launched in 2000 as a tribute to James Fleming.
