Tasting note

Nose

Lime, lots of mineral characteristics and even scent reminiscent of fresh white wines as made in the Loire. Hints of shoe polish provide some bitter notes. Perhaps even something of rhubarb.

Taste

Green pepper, bit grassy and lots of character. The firm alcohol content certainly works in its favour, what a powerhouse. The cask has certainly taken away the sharp edges, but not added any strong flavours, balancing the flavour perfectly.

Finish

Dry, spicy and lingering.

Overall impression

This is no longer made and we will never see this again. Pity very pity, because this is among the absolute best.

Coleburn Distillery

Coleburn Distillery is located in the heart of the Speyside region, near the village of Longmorn in Moray. Founded in 1897 by John Robertson & Sons, Coleburn has a rich, if interrupted, history in the production of Scotch whisky. The distillery closed in 1985, but remains a fascinating part of whisky history.

A unique feature of Coleburn is the use of pure spring water from nearby springs, which contributes to the clarity and quality of their whiskies. Coleburn whiskies were known for their smooth and refined flavour profiles, with notes of fruit, flowers, honey and a subtle hint of spice. The distillery used traditional copper pot stills and the whisky matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a balanced and refined flavour.

Although Coleburn has not been in production for many years, the remaining bottles are highly sought after by enthusiasts, collectors and investors because of their rarity and the delicate, refined flavour they offer. The former distillery buildings are now a cultural heritage site, a reminder of Coleburn's rich tradition and history. The combination of a historic location, traditional techniques and the unique quality of the whiskies makes Coleburn a respected name in the world of Scotch single malt whisky.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) is a prestigious and exclusive whisky club, founded in 1983 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The SMWS is known for its unique approach to selecting and bottling single cask whiskies, available exclusively to members. It is one of the most respected names in the whisky world worldwide for the high quality and special character of their bottlings.

Instead of listing the name of the distillery on the label, the SMWS uses a unique numbering system for their bottlings. The first number refers to the distillery and the second number to the specific cask bottled. This system adds to the mystique and exclusivity of the bottlings.
