Tasting Notes

Nose

Fresh and fruity with aromas of green apple, lime and a touch of toffee. Subtle notes of vanilla and honey from the oak cask influence.

Glen Moray Distillery

Glen Moray Distillery is located on the banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, in the Speyside region of Scotland. Founded in 1897, Glen Moray has a rich history of more than a century in producing high-quality single malt whiskies. The distillery is located on the site of a former brewery, which adds to its historic charm.

A unique feature of Glen Moray is the use of water from the River Lossie, which contributes to the character of their whiskies. Glen Moray whiskies are known for their elegant, smooth and accessible flavour profiles, with notes of vanilla, fruit and light spiciness. The distillery often experiments with different cask types for maturation, notably including ex-bourbon, sherry and wine casks, making for a rich and diverse taste experience.

The combination of an idyllic location, innovative maturation techniques and a dedication to craftsmanship makes Glen Moray a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Glen Moray did not begin as a distillery, but as the Elgin West Brewery. In 1897, the brewery was converted for single malt whisky production, and the first spirit flowed from the stills on 13 September that year. After a difficult early period and closure in 1910, Glen Moray was acquired in 1923 by Macdonald & Muir, then also the owner of Glenmorangie. Under this family business, the distillery was expanded and further modernised.

Since 2008, Glen Moray has been part of the French group La Martiniquaise-Bardinet. The distillery is known for its approachable, gentle Speyside style and its early interest in different cask types. Even its first spirit was filled into casks including sherry and Marsala wood. From 1999, this experimentation gained a modern continuation with finishes in Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc casks.

Glen Moray generally produces a light and fruity single malt, with notes of apple, citrus, vanilla, malt and gentle spice. Alongside classic bourbon and sherry cask maturation, the range also includes wine cask finishes and smoky expressions. This gives both newcomers and experienced whisky drinkers a broad and recognisable Speyside profile.
