Tasting note

Nose

This Glen Spey opens with delicate floral aromas of chamomile and lavender, blended with honeyed notes of heather honey and caramel. There are also hints of fresh green apple and a subtle touch of vanilla.

Taste

On the palate, this whisky offers an elegant and smooth texture, with a nice balance between sweet and spicy. Honey, ripe pears and juicy apricots are complemented by a slight spiciness of cinnamon and a hint of nutmeg. Subtle oak influences add a refined depth to the flavour profile

Glen Spey Distillery

Glen Spey Distillery is located in the town of Rothes, in the heart of Scotland's Speyside region. Founded in 1878 by James Stuart, a former manager of Macallan, Glen Spey has a rich history in whisky production. The distillery was taken over by W&A Gilbey in 1887, bringing stability and growth to the distillery.

A unique feature of Glen Spey is the use of so-called "purifiers" on the stills, which therefore produce a lighter and purer spirit. The distillery uses water from the nearby Doonie Burn, which contributes to the purity and quality of their whiskies. Glen Spey whiskies are known for their light and delicate flavour profiles, with notes of apple, pear and a subtle spiciness.

The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks, which ensures a smooth and balanced flavour. Glen Spey produces mainly for blended whiskies, including J&B, but their single malts are also appreciated for their finesse and complexity. The combination of a picturesque location, innovative techniques and high-quality production makes Glen Spey a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is one of the oldest and most respected independent bottlers in the world. The company was founded in 1698 and is headquartered in St James's Street, London. The family business originally began as a coffee merchant, but soon expanded into the wine and spirits trade. Today, Berry Bros. & Rudd is known for its high-quality whiskies, as well as a wide range of wines and other spirits.

History

Founded in 1698 by the widow Bourne, Berry Bros. & Rudd began as a shop selling coffee, tea and spices. Soon the shop became a meeting place for London's elite, and the company expanded into selling wine and spirits. Over the years, Berry Bros. & Rudd has built strong ties with the British royal family. The company is a court supplier and has received several royal warrants throughout its long history.

Glen Spey was founded in 1878 by grain merchant James Stuart. He converted a former oatmeal mill in Rothes into a distillery and initially named it Mill of Rothes. In 1887, Stuart sold the business to W. & A. Gilbey, after which the name Glen Spey was introduced. Through later mergers, the distillery eventually became part of Diageo.

Glen Spey mainly produces malt whisky for blended Scotch and has long been closely associated with J&B. As a result, the distillery remained largely out of sight as a single malt. Official bottlings are scarce, with the best-known release being the 12-year-old expression in the Flora & Fauna range. Independent bottlers offer enthusiasts more opportunities to explore Glen Spey at different ages and from a variety of cask types.

The stills are fitted with purifiers, which return part of the vapour for additional copper contact. This helps create a relatively light and gentle Speyside spirit, with notes of malt, pear, apple, herbs and fresh grass. Glen Spey therefore particularly appeals to drinkers who enjoy subtle whisky and lesser-known distilleries.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is one of Britain’s oldest and most distinguished wine and spirits merchants. Its history began in 1698, when the Widow Bourne opened a grocery shop on St James’s Street in London. During the nineteenth century, the company increasingly focused on wine and spirits, while the Berry name became permanently associated with the business. The Rudd family joined in the twentieth century.

Berry Bros. & Rudd also has an exceptionally long heritage in whisky. Its oldest known own-label cask bottling dates from 1853, making the company one of Britain’s oldest independent bottlers. In 1923, Francis Berry and Hugh Rudd also created Cutty Sark, a lighter blended Scotch that achieved considerable international success.
