Glenfarclas 1983 - 2018 #28 The Family Casks

The Glenfarclas Family Casks series contains single cask bottlings of different vintages since the early 1950s. For each vintage, only one cask was chosen as the best of that year. To continue offering the full series, there have been several releases. These vintage whiskies are bottled at cask strength, with natural colour and no cold filtration. This vintage 1983 cask no. 28 is outstanding in quality.

Glenfarclas Distillery

Glenfarclas Distillery is located in the heart of the Speyside region, at the foot of Mount Ben Rinnes in Ballindalloch. Founded in 1836 by Robert Hay and owned by the Grant family since 1865, Glenfarclas has a rich history of more than a century and a half in producing high-quality single malt whiskies. This distillery prides itself on its independence and family management, which contributes to the consistent quality and character of their products.

A unique feature of Glenfarclas is the use of directly fired copper pot stills, which contributes to the rich and full flavour of their whiskies. The distillery uses pure spring water from nearby springs on the Ben Rinnes, providing a pure and fresh base for their whisky.

Glenfarclas whiskies are known for their rich, complex flavour profiles, with notes of sherry, dried fruit and spices. The whiskies are mainly matured in ex-Oloroso sherry casks, creating a deep, sweet and layered flavour experience. The combination of a beautiful location, traditional techniques and high-quality production makes Glenfarclas a respected name in the world of Scotch whisky.

Glenfarclas Distillery

Glenfarclas was founded in 1836 by Robert Hay at the foot of Ben Rinnes, in the heart of Speyside. Following his death, John Grant purchased the distillery and its adjoining farm in 1865. Glenfarclas has remained in the Grant family ever since, with successive generations continuing to run the business independently. This freedom allows the distillery to follow its own course and retain substantial stocks for long-term maturation.

Production remains notably traditional. Glenfarclas uses large copper pot stills that are still heated directly by gas flames. This method contributes to a powerful, full-bodied spirit capable of developing beautifully over many years. Ex-sherry casks play the leading role in maturation, particularly European oak casks that previously held oloroso sherry.

Glenfarclas is known for a rich, classic Speyside style, with dried fruit, nuts, caramel, spice and dark chocolate. Alongside an extensive range of age-stated bottlings, the distillery is highly regarded for The Family Casks, a collection of single cask whiskies drawn from many consecutive vintages.
