Mars Tsunuki Peated
The Mars Tsunuki Peated is an intriguing Japanese single malt whisky from the Mars Tsunuki Distillery, located in the warm and humid southern region of Japan. This expression pays homage to peated whiskies, a rarity in the Japanese whisky scene. The Tsunuki climate provides a unique maturation environment, allowing flavors to develop more intensely and quickly. With its peaty character and deep complexity, this whisky is a perfect choice for lovers of smoky expressions.
Tasting note
Nose
An inviting aroma of campfire smoke, paired with notes of vanilla, caramelized apple, and a hint of lemon. Subtle touches of clove and dried herbs add depth.
Taste
A rich, bold palate featuring roasted malt, dark chocolate, and peat. Gentle hints of honey, citrus, and black pepper provide a refined and balanced profile.
Finish
Long and smoky, with lingering notes of charcoal, dark cocoa, and a slight saltiness that stays on the palate.
Mars Tsunuki Distillery
The Mars Tsunuki Distillery is one of the two distilleries operated by Hombo Shuzo, a Japanese producer of whisky, sake, and shochu. Located in the southern Kagoshima Prefecture, the distillery stands out due to its unique location and climatic conditions. The warm and humid climate of Tsunuki accelerates the whisky aging process, resulting in rich and complex flavor profiles.
The distillery officially opened in 2016 and complements the Mars Shinshu Distillery, which is located in the cool mountainous region of Nagano. The Tsunuki Distillery is situated on the original site where Hombo Shuzo produced whisky in the 1950s before shifting operations to Shinshu. By reopening Tsunuki, Hombo Shuzo honors its historical roots while introducing a new dimension to its whisky production.
What makes the Mars Tsunuki Distillery particularly special is its small-scale, artisanal approach. It produces whisky in limited quantities, focusing on experiments with different types of malt and maturation techniques. The aging of whisky barrels takes place in a nearby warehouse, where the warm Tsunuki climate plays a crucial role in shaping the character of the whiskies.
