Hakushu 18 Years Old is a renowned single malt whisky from Japan, produced by the Suntory distillery in the mountains of Yamanashi. It is a whisky known for its balance of fresh and smoky notes, combined with complex fruity and spicy flavours.
Tasting note
Nose
The aroma opens with a light smoke, followed by notes of wood and pine. There are also fruity nuances of pear and grape, and a subtle hint of spices such as mint and fennel.
Taste
On the tongue, Hakushu 18 offers a rich blend of honey, orange, papaya and star fruit. These fruity elements are complemented by notes of toasted oak, green grapes, cinnamon and a hint of smoke and bitter notes. The palate is lively, tropical and surprisingly complex, with good viscosity and roundness.
Finish
The finish is long and refreshing, with flavours of mint, grass and a salty breeze. There are also hints of roasted coffee and smoke, which are particularly prominent in the aftertaste. The finish is elegant and refined, leaving a lasting impression.
Hakushu Distillery
Hakushu Distillery is located deep in the forests of the Southern Japanese Alps, in Yamanashi Prefecture, surrounded by the rich natural landscape of the Japanese mountains. Founded in 1973 by Suntory, Hakushu builds on the rich tradition of Japanese whisky, inspired by the pioneering spirit of the nearby Yamazaki Distillery.
A unique feature of Hakushu is the use of pure mountain water from the rivers that cross the region, which contributes to the freshness and clarity of their whiskies. The distillery uses a variety of stills and matures their whisky in a wide range of casks, including ex-bourbon, sherry and Japanese Mizunara oak casks. This results in a complex and layered flavour profile.
Hakushu whiskies are known for their light and fresh character, with notes of orchard fruit and a subtle spiciness. The distillery places a strong emphasis on preserving the natural environment and using sustainable production methods.
The combination of an idyllic mountain location and a commitment to quality makes Hakushu Distillery a respected name in the world of Japanese whisky.
