Description

Conte di Campiano Primitivo di Manduria Riserva 2022

This is a Primitivo where you can taste the south immediately: ripe, warm and generous, with a plush, velvety style. Riserva really means an extra step here—more concentration, more depth, and a calmer, more polished feel. Perfect when you want a full-bodied red that’s smooth and crowd-pleasing, yet not simplistic.

Tasting Note

Colour

Deep, dark ruby with an almost inky core.

Nose

Black cherry, plum jam and blackberry, followed by cocoa, vanilla, liquorice and warm spices. There’s also a touch of tobacco and a hint of balsamic in the background.

Palate

Dry but richly flavoured, with a rounded, silky texture. Plenty of dark fruit and cherry compote, joined by chocolate, spice and a gentle dried-fruit note. Tannins are ripe and velvety, acidity is mild, so the wine feels broad and comforting without becoming heavy.

Finish

Long and warming, lingering on dark fruit, cocoa and a spicy, lightly sweet impression at the end.

Food Pairing

Brilliant with slow-cooked meats, ribeye, pulled pork, spare ribs and richly spiced stews. Also excellent with barbecue, rosemary-grilled vegetables and hearty pasta dishes. For cheese, go for mature hard cheeses or a characterful blue.

Producer

Conte di Campiano crafts Puglian wines focused on ripe fruit and pure enjoyment. With this Primitivo di Manduria Riserva, they show just how seductive and full the region can be, using extra ageing to add softness and complexity. A wine that’s easy to love, yet still well put together.

Conte di Campiano

Conte di Campiano is an Italian wine range created by a family-owned producer from Veneto in northern Italy. Its name is connected to a local tale about a count who paused during his travels among the hills of the Val Tramigna. From an elevated position, he looked out across vineyards, houses and the surrounding countryside. The landscape and the scent of young wine made such an impression that he decided to remain there. From that moment onwards, local people are said to have known him as the Conte di Campiano.

The company behind the label was established in the late 1950s and developed from its home near Verona. Conte di Campiano brings wines from several Italian regions together under one recognisable name, while respecting the grape varieties, styles and traditions associated with each area. The collection reveals both the sunny south and the cooler north of Italy, combining a distinctive Italian identity with an approachable style of winemaking.
