Penfolds Bin 111A Shiraz 2016

The Penfolds Bin 111A Shiraz 2016 is a powerful and expressive Australian Shiraz from South Australia, with a clear focus on concentration, ripe fruit, and structure. This wine sits a step above the entry-level Bin range and shows a more serious, intense side of Penfolds. Rich and layered, yet precise enough to remain elegant.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep, dark ruby red with an almost opaque core.

Aroma

Intense and concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and ripe plum, complemented by dark chocolate, liquorice, black pepper, spice, and refined oak.

Taste

Full-bodied and powerful with flavours of dark fruit, cocoa, and spice. The tannins are firm yet ripe, providing structure and length. Concentrated and warm in character, balanced by fresh acidity.

Finish

Long and persistent with dark fruit, spice, and an elegant oak nuance.

Food Pairing

Excellent with grilled or roasted red meats, barbecue dishes, lamb, game, and hearty stews. Also very enjoyable on its own.

Producer

Penfolds is Australia’s most iconic wine producer, founded in 1844. The estate is renowned for its consistency, precision, and multi-regional blending philosophy across South Australia. The Bin wines showcase different expressions of Shiraz, with Bin 111A recognised for its power, concentration, and modern style.

Penfolds

Penfolds is one of Australia’s best-known wineries. It was founded in 1844 by Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate, near Adelaide in South Australia. What began with fortified wines and medicinal tonics developed under Mary’s leadership into an important wine business. From the late nineteenth century onwards, the focus gradually shifted towards dry table wines, allowing Penfolds to play a major role in the development of Australian winemaking.

A defining moment came in 1951 with the first experimental vintage of Grange. This powerful, age-worthy Shiraz became the flagship of Penfolds and helped establish Australian wine on the international stage. The winery is known for its distinctive house style and its freedom to combine grapes from different vineyards and regions. Rather than being tied to a single site, the desired quality and style guide each blend. Penfolds produces red and white wines across a broad range of price levels, from approachable Bin wines to prestigious bottles made for long-term ageing, consistently combining ripe fruit, structure, balance and carefully judged oak.
