Cognac Famille Cabanne Lot 53 Grande Champagne The Roots

Nose

Deep and elegant, with ripe apple, pear and quince, followed by dried apricot and fresh figs. Subtle notes of chalk, leather and tobacco leaf gradually make way for honey, mint and aromatic herbal liqueurs.

Palate

Compact, silky and beautifully concentrated, with orange liqueur, candied citrus peel and sultanas. Honey, figs and caramelised nuts mingle with peppermint, saffron and black pepper, while the mature oak remains remarkably restrained.

Finish

Long and lively, with citrus, honey and fragrant tea. Cinnamon, black pepper and refined oak create a warm, elegantly drying conclusion.

The history of Famille Cabanne began in 1810, when François Cabanne moved to the Charente region with his family. The family initially worked in agriculture, but in 1844 Jean-Célestin Cabanne expanded its activities into winegrowing. His son Philémon took the next step and began distilling wine. With three copper pot stills, the distillery was already considered one of the larger operations in the Cognac region at the time. The family business continued to grow with each generation and now operates fifteen stills.

Famille Cabanne is the umbrella name of the family company rather than simply a single cognac brand. The family produces and trades various spirits, although cognac remains its historical core. Its work includes growing grapes, distilling wine and maturing and blending eaux-de-vie. The cognacs are released primarily under the name Richard Delisle, a brand established in 1834 and acquired by the Cabanne family after the Second World War. Famille Cabanne also produces cognac under the La Truffe name. Representing the fourth generation of distillers, cellar master Alexis Cabanne combines traditional double distillation, extended oak maturation and carefully composed blends with a contemporary approach to cognac.

The Roots is a Belgian independent bottler founded in 2022 by whisky enthusiast Joren Nuyts. After many years of discovering, tasting and collecting whisky and other spirits, he decided to turn his passion into a bottling brand of his own. The name represents a return to the essentials: respect for provenance, craftsmanship and the natural qualities of each spirit.

At The Roots, quality clearly takes priority over quantity. Only casks that immediately convince through balance, character and flavour are considered worthy of the label. The first releases already demonstrated this broad interest: an old Invergordon single grain whisky, a Prunier Cognac and a Bellevue rum. Scottish single malts, Irish whiskey, Armagnac and other distinctive spirits followed.

Bottlings are released in small quantities and presented as purely as possible: at natural colour, without chill filtration and preferably at cask strength. The numbered editions and carefully designed labels give each bottle its own identity. The Roots therefore appeals to enthusiasts who look beyond familiar names and value remarkable casks with a clear story and an individual character.
