Japan's first distillery, Yamazaki, opened its doors in 1923. Two names stand at the foundation of Japan's whisky industry. Shinjiro Torii, founder of Suntory and Masatake Taketsuru, founder of the Nikka brand. Meanwhile, Japan has become one of the major players when it comes to whisky countries, both in terms of quantity and quality. Currently, five percent of worldwide sales is Japanese whisky, which means that 1 in 20 bottles sold comes from Japan.
