Description
Grosperrin Fins Bois N°45 is an exceptionally old Cognac originating from a rare lot of just two casks. The number refers to the 1945 harvest, although the Cognac is not officially designated as a vintage. The lot was acquired in 2019 through a sworn broker from a renowned merchant house and bottled at 52.1%. A powerful and remarkably vibrant Fins Bois combining exotic fruit, honey and waxy notes with pronounced rancio and evocative old-cellar aromas.
Tasting note
Nose

Rich and layered, with exotic fruit, dried pear and candied citrus. Linden honey, beeswax and stewed fruit are complemented by chalky minerality, old cellars, mushrooms and refined rancio.

Palate

Powerful, oily and surprisingly lively, with honey, marmalade and ripe tropical fruit. Cooked fruits, wax, spices and a touch of coffee mingle with intense rancio and mature oak. Despite its high strength, the Cognac remains beautifully balanced.

Finish

Exceptionally long, full and concentrated, with honey, citrus and dried fruit. Tobacco, spices, mineral notes and elegantly drying oak linger with impressive persistence.

Grosperrin

Cognac Grosperrin emerged at the end of the twentieth century through the work of Jean Grosperrin. After working as a distiller himself, he settled in the Cognac region in 1991 and became an eaux-de-vie broker the following year. During visits to small producers, he discovered remarkable old stocks that would often disappear into large blends. In 1999, he purchased several of these casks to bottle them separately, accompanied by details of their history and age. His son Guilhem took over the family business in 2004 and continued developing this approach.

Grosperrin is not a vineyard estate or traditional distillery, but an independent négociant-éleveur: a cognac house that selects and purchases eaux-de-vie before overseeing their further maturation and bottling. The house works with producers across all six crus of the Cognac region, from Grande Champagne and Borderies to Bons Bois and Bois Ordinaires. Rather than creating a uniform house style through blending, Grosperrin seeks to reveal the character of a particular origin, vintage and family history. Its cognacs mature partly in humid cellars beside the Charente and are often released in small quantities. Grosperrin thus presents an exceptionally diverse view of traditional Cognac craftsmanship.
