Nose

Rich and inviting with vanilla, toffee and caramel. Then come raisins, dried fig and a touch of orange peel, backed by toasted oak, nuttiness and gentle spice.

Palate

Full and creamy with toffee, vanilla and a soft molasses note. Dried fruit and nuts add depth, followed by cocoa, cinnamon and a warm oak structure that carries everything nicely.

Finish

Long and warming with lingering vanilla, caramel and spiced oak. It fades slightly dry with nuttiness, cocoa and a gentle sweet note.

Ron Abuelo is one of Panama’s best known rum brands and is produced by the family owned company Varela Hermanos. Its history begins in 1908, when José Varela Blanco established Ingenio San Isidro in Pesé, the first sugar mill of the young Republic of Panama. The family began distilling alcohol from sugar cane in 1936, and Ron Abuelo itself was produced for the first time in 1960.

Over the years, Abuelo developed into a specialist in matured Panamanian rum. Ageing therefore plays an important role in the identity of the house, with American white oak among the woods used for maturation. Alongside classic añejo rum, Abuelo introduced increasingly mature expressions and explored additional cask maturation. This resulted in bottlings finished in casks previously used for oloroso sherry, Cognac and tawny port.

Ron Abuelo therefore combines a long family tradition with a clear focus on wood and maturation. From approachable añejo to extensively aged and specially finished rum, the brand offers a broad introduction to the style and development of Panamanian rum.
