Brora 1982 - 1997 Connoisseurs Choice

Distilled in 1982, this Brora was bottled by Gordon & MacPhail in 1997 in the Connoisseurs Choice series. This series has been around since the late 1970s and has changed labels regularly. Colloquially, this version is called 'old map label'.

Tasting notes

Nose

Brora, like its sister distillery, is known for its waxy character. This certainly comes out in this glass along with the scent of brine. The smokiness you would expect is very much in the background. Perhaps the scent is best described as a fresh oyster with a pinch of pepper.

Taste

Despite only 40%, we are dealing with a very flavourful whisky here. A good glass of whisky grabs the whole tongue and that's what happens here. Hint of peat, hint of coconut, hint of saltiness. The nose is fully lived up to.

Finish

Dark tea, overripe fruit, peat and the hint of pepper make for a nice long finish.

Overall impression

Where are the oysters when you need them. This particular maritime malt from a closed distillery is very much to your liking.

More about Brora

The Brora distillery (originally known as Clynelish) was built in 1819 by the Duke of Sutherland. In 1925, it came into the hands of DCL, now known as Diageo. In 1967, the distillery closed for the first time as a whole new distillery took over production, Clynelish. As early as 1968, the old Clynelish distillery reopened, but now under the name Brora. Bottlings of Brora produced between 1968 and 1983 are highly sought after as more peated malt was used to produce Brora Single Malt Whisky during the period. In 1983, the doors of this distillery closed for good. Well, permanently, in 2021 the Brora distillery was revived so Brora is back.
