Lochside was founded in 1957, but its vintages only date from the early to mid 1960s and early 1980s, as in the intervening period the Spanish owners, Destilerias y Crianzas (DYC), used the malt exclusively for export blends. Before that, the distillery was owned by Joseph Hobbs, who used both pot still and coffey still and, at its inception, blended both malt and grain for the distillery's Sandy MacNab brand. Some of these "blended at birth" casks were later bottled by independent labels. The death of Hobbs in 1964 brought this practice to an end and until 1992 the distillery produced only malt.
