Lagavulin 1980 - 1995 Society Cask No. 111.2

This whisky comes from a time when The Scotch Malt Whisky Society still had casks from the Lagavulin Distillery. The last cask they bottled was in 2001 (111.17). Dissecting the numbers, the 111 stands for Lagavulin Distillery and the 2 is the second cask ever bottled by SMWS. Distilled in 1980 and bottled in 1995.

Tasting note

Nose

Peat, soot, oily smoked fish, lapsang souchong tea, oysters with seawater and really thick iodine like it smelled in hospitals in the 1960s. These are the smells of the past, you don't smell them in today's whiskies.

Taste

The first sip is instant enjoyment, smoked grain, apple syrup, again the smoked fish, anchovies. also in the flavour the smoke comes from the mouth straight into the nose. BBQ stuffed squid that is well seasoned. This is what you hope for when you drink Lagavulin. Superb.

Finish

The finish is characterised by its ashy character. Like you're emptying the kiln and chewing on a piece of beef jerky.

More about Lagavulin Distillery

The Lagavulin distillery has a rich history dating back to the year 1816, when it was founded by John Johnston on the south coast of the island of Islay, in Scotland. Not long after, in 1817, a nearby distillery was established, which would eventually be integrated into Lagavulin. The unique seaside location contributes to the whisky's distinctive character, with the influence of sea air being unmistakable.

Over the years, Lagavulin has developed significantly and has become one of the most revered names in the single malt whisky world. It is known for its rich, peaty flavour profile with a powerful smoke flavour, which is typical of Islay whiskies. This spirit has depth and complexity resulting from its long fermentation times, traditional distilling methods and maturation in oak casks, giving it a full, smooth and rich flavour.

Lagavulin Distillery

Lagavulin Distillery is located on the south coast of the island of Islay, overlooking the rugged coastline and Lagavulin Bay. Founded in 1816 by John Johnston, the distillery has built a rich history and a strong reputation as one of the most iconic Islay distilleries.

A specific feature of Lagavulin is the intense peat smoke that gives its whiskies a deep smoky character. The distillery is known for its slow distillation process in traditional copper pot stills, which creates a rich and complex flavour profile. The whisky is mainly matured in ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry casks, which contributes to the full and layered flavours.

Lagavulin whiskies are loved for their powerful aromas of smoke, seaweed, salt, vanilla and dried fruit. The long, warm finish and perfect balance between smoke and sweetness make Lagavulin a favourite among whisky lovers. The combination of traditional methods, a unique location and a distinctive flavour profile makes Lagavulin an iconic name in the world of single malt whisky.
