Caperdonich 14 years 1968 - Connoisseurs Choice 0.75 liter

This Caperdonich was distilled in 1968 and was bottled in the Connoisseurs Choice series by Gordon & MacPhail around 1982 after a 14-year maturation in oak casks. This series has been around since the late 1970s and has changed labels regularly. Colloquially, this version is called 'brown label'. For a bottle bottled over 40 years ago, the condition is particularly good.

Tasting note

Nose

Honey, lemon, freshly baked biscuits. The nose is spoilt by delicious scents. Peat is also detected in the nose. 

Taste

As you sip a little more, the whisky becomes a little sweeter. Nice malt notes with the sweet biscuits here too. Small bitterness presumably from the sherry cask combined with that hint of peat.

Finish

The finish is excellent. Makes the palate warm nicely.

More about Caperdonich Distillery

Caperdonich Distillery, a Scottish single malt whisky distillery, was once located in the Speyside region, near the town of Rothes in Moray, Scotland. The distillery was originally founded under the name "Glen Grant No. 2" in 1897 by the owners of the neighbouring Glen Grant distillery, J. & J. Grant. The intention was to increase Glen Grant's capacity due to increasing demand for their whisky.

Caperdonich was located directly opposite the Glen Grant distillery and was connected via a pipeline, making it possible to transfer malt wine product directly to Glen Grant. However, this was not long-lived. Pattison's whisky crisis in 1898 hit the whisky industry hard, and after only four years the distillery had to close in 1902.

It remained closed for more than six decades, until it was reopened by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. in 1965, and was eventually named "Caperdonich," which means "secret spring" in Gaelic. During the second half of the 20th century, Caperdonich's whisky was mainly used as part of blended whiskies. The distillery gained cult status among whisky lovers, thanks in part to the relative scarcity of its single malts on the market, as most of its production went to blends.

Unfortunately, Caperdonich was closed in 2002 by Pernod Ricard, the owner at the time, and was demolished in 2010. Despite no longer existing, bottlings of Caperdonich are still available on the secondary market and from collectors, often treasured for their historical value and unique character.
