A whisky from days gone by — both literally and figuratively. The Caperdonich distillery, once located in Rothes, Morayshire, closed permanently in 2002 and was later demolished. What remains are rare bottles like this one: a 22-year-old single malt, distilled in 1991 and bottled in 2014 by Berry Bros. & Rudd. Drawn from cask #78968, non-chill filtered and non-coloured, this whisky offers a pure expression of a now-legendary Speyside distillery. A wonderful opportunity to taste a piece of whisky history.

Tasting Note

Nose

Gentle notes of ripe peach and apricot, with floral touches and a hint of beeswax. Subtle aromas of vanilla, citrus oil, and a whiff of old books and oak follow.

Palate

Elegant and layered: juicy fruits like yellow apple and nectarine take the lead, followed by creamy vanilla, marzipan, and a light spiciness of white pepper. All beautifully integrated with a delicate oak influence.

Finish

Long and softly drying, with a fine balance of fruit, spice, and a hint of tobacco and aged leather. A nostalgic finish that lingers warmly on the palate.

Caperdonich Distillery

Caperdonich Distillery was located in the heart of the Speyside region, in the small town of Rothes. Founded in 1898 by James Grant under the name Glen Grant No. 2, the distillery closed in 1902 and only reopened in 1965 under the name Caperdonich, meaning 'secret spring' in Gaelic. The distillery has a rich, if intermittent, history in whisky production.

A unique feature of Caperdonich was the use of water from nearby springs, which contributed to the purity and character of their whiskies. Caperdonich whiskies were known for their smooth and complex flavour profiles, with notes of honey, fruit, vanilla and a slight spiciness. The distillery used traditional copper pot stills and the whisky matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a balanced and refined flavour.

Although the distillery closed permanently in 2002 and was later demolished, the remaining bottles remain highly sought after by aficionados, collectors and investors due to their rarity and exceptional quality. Caperdonich remains a respected part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the unique and high-quality single malts it produced.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is one of the oldest and most respected independent bottlers in the world. The company was founded in 1698 and is headquartered in St James's Street, London. The family business originally began as a coffee merchant, but soon expanded into the wine and spirits trade. Today, Berry Bros. & Rudd is known for its high-quality whiskies, as well as a wide range of wines and other spirits.

History

Founded in 1698 by the widow Bourne, Berry Bros. & Rudd began as a shop selling coffee, tea and spices. Soon the shop became a meeting place for London's elite, and the company expanded into selling wine and spirits. Over the years, Berry Bros. & Rudd has built strong ties with the British royal family. The company is a court supplier and has received several royal warrants throughout its long history.

Caperdonich was built in Rothes in 1898 by J. & J. Grant as Glen Grant No. 2. Standing opposite Glen Grant, the new distillery was intended to meet rapidly growing demand for its whisky. The timing proved unfortunate: following the collapse of the whisky market, production ceased in 1902. The distillery did not return to operation until 1965. Two years later, the number of stills was increased from two to four, and in 1977 it was renamed Caperdonich.

That same year, the distillery passed to Seagram through The Glenlivet Distillers. Its whisky was used mainly for blended Scotch, so official single malts remained extremely scarce for many years. Pernod Ricard acquired Caperdonich in 2001 but closed it permanently in 2002. The buildings were demolished in 2011.

Caperdonich is therefore regarded as a lost Speyside distillery. Independent bottlings and the later Secret Speyside collection reveal both unpeated and smoky whisky. Limited remaining stocks, advanced ages and the disappearance of the distillery itself have made Caperdonich especially desirable among collectors and whisky enthusiasts.

Berry Bros. & Rudd is one of Britain’s oldest and most distinguished wine and spirits merchants. Its history began in 1698, when the Widow Bourne opened a grocery shop on St James’s Street in London. During the nineteenth century, the company increasingly focused on wine and spirits, while the Berry name became permanently associated with the business. The Rudd family joined in the twentieth century.

Berry Bros. & Rudd also has an exceptionally long heritage in whisky. Its oldest known own-label cask bottling dates from 1853, making the company one of Britain’s oldest independent bottlers. In 1923, Francis Berry and Hugh Rudd also created Cutty Sark, a lighter blended Scotch that achieved considerable international success.
