Tasting note
Nose
This is a classic sherry nose. You can smell the cask character, but it certainly doesn't overpower it. Walnut, mirabelle plums, pears, hint of caramel, citrus notes in the form of orange marmalade. Give the glass time, you will be rewarded for your patience.
Taste
The first thing that comes to mind is creamy. The spirit creates a greasy layer on the tongue. The orange marmalade is also deliciously present in the flavour. Bitterly sweet, with notes of dried fruit.
Finish
This is an all-time classic. Round and sultry finish that quenches delightfully on the palate.
Extra information
Longmorn is a popular Speyside distillery and an essential part of many blends over the years. Much of its production is therefore reserved for this purpose, and although bottlings from the distillery first appeared in the 1980s, it was rarely seen before the 15-year-old expression was relaunched in 1993. However, the distillery has long been prominent on the independent scene and has cult status in Japan, perhaps not least because of its connection with Nikka founder Masataka Taketsuru, who modelled Yoichi's stills on those of Longmorn.
This 15-year-old was the distillery's first bottling and first appeared in the 1980s. This is the updated version introduced in 1993 as part of the Heritage Collection, which also launched new brands for Glen Keith, Benriach and Strathisla. This followed similar packages from United Distillers called the Classic Malts in 1988, and the Caledonian Malts from Allied Distillers in 1991, as Scotland's historic blending powerhouses slowly adapted to the then newly booming single malt market.
The age statement was replaced by a 16-year-old expression in 2007.
