Millburn Distillery

Millburn Distillery was located in Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands, along the banks of the River Ness. Founded in 1807, Millburn was one of the oldest distilleries in the region and had an eventful history with several closures and ownership transfers before it closed permanently in 1985.

A specific feature of Millburn was the use of water from the nearby Loch Ness, which contributed to the whiskies' distinctive flavour profile. Millburn whiskies were known for their robust and complex flavour, with notes of malt, fruit, honey and a subtle spiciness. The distillery used traditional copper pot stills and the whisky matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a balanced and deep flavour.

Despite the closure, Millburn's remaining bottles remain highly sought after by aficionados, collectors and investors because of their rarity and historical value. Millburn remains a fascinating part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the exceptional quality of its single malts.

Signatory Vintage

Signatory Vintage is one of the most respected and recognised independent bottlers in the whisky world. The company was founded in 1988 by Andrew Symington and is based in Pitlochry, Scotland. Signatory Vintage is known for its impressive collection of single malt and single grain whiskies sourced from various Scottish distilleries.

In 2002 Andrew Symington acquired Edradour Distillery, one of the smallest traditional distilleries in Scotland. This has enabled Signatory Vintage to offer exclusive bottlings of Edradour whiskies alongside their regular independent bottlings.

Millburn Distillery

Millburn Distillery stood on Millburn Road in Inverness and was the oldest of the city’s three former distilleries. Its history is generally traced back to 1807. After several early owners and interruptions, grain merchant David Rose acquired the property in 1853 and used it as a flour mill. In 1876, Rose expanded the complex and returned it to whisky production. His son George sold Millburn to Alexander and David Haig in 1892, after which the distillery was modernised again.

Booth’s acquired Millburn in 1921, followed by a major restoration after a fire in 1922. Booth’s became part of the Distillers Company Limited in 1937 and Millburn joined Scottish Malt Distillers. Its traditional floor maltings were replaced by Saladin boxes in 1964; two years later, the stillhouse was rebuilt and the stills changed from direct to indirect heating. Millburn remained a small producer and closed in 1985 during the major rationalisation of the Scotch whisky industry. Most of the complex was demolished, while part of the site was later converted into a hotel and restaurant.
