Tasting Notes

Nose

Classic and complex. Notes of dried herbs, fresh hay, and leather combine with beeswax, citrus zest, and a hint of antique books. Beneath it all lies a subtle earthiness reminiscent of damp cellars and autumnal woods.

Palate

Dry and refined. The first sip reveals malt, candied orange peel, and nuts, followed by light tobacco, clove, and a trace of cedarwood. The texture is firm yet elegant, with a waxy, old-school charm.

Finish

Long and spicy. Dried apple, black tea, and a touch of mineral smoke linger softly. The finish is dignified, classic, and full of quiet intrigue—just like North Port itself.

North Port Distillery

North Port Distillery, also known as Brechin Distillery, was located in the town of Brechin in the Angus region. Founded in 1820 by the Townend Brothers, the distillery had a rich history spanning almost two centuries before closing permanently in 1983.

A specific feature of North Port was the use of local water from the nearby Esk River, which contributed to the unique character of their whiskies. North Port whiskies were known for their robust and complex flavour profiles, with notes of malt, spices and orchard fruit. The distillery used traditional copper pot stills and the whisky matured mainly in ex-bourbon casks, which ensured a balanced and deep flavour.

Despite the closure, North Port's remaining bottles are highly sought after by enthusiasts, collectors and investors because of their rarity and historical value. North Port remains a fascinating part of Scotch whisky history, remembered for the exceptional quality of its single malts. The distillery has since been demolished, but its legendary name lives on in the hearts of whisky lovers.

Cadenhead

Cadenhead, known in full as William Cadenhead Ltd, is the world's oldest independent bottler of Scotch whisky. Founded in 1842 in Aberdeen, Scotland, the company is known for its high-quality, authentic whiskies and other spirits. Cadenhead has a long and rich history and enjoys worldwide esteem among whisky lovers and collectors.

History

Cadenhead was founded in 1842 by George Duncan, but soon William Cadenhead, Duncan's brother-in-law, took over the company. Under his leadership, the company grew into a respected name in the whisky trade. Initially known as a wine and spirits merchant, Cadenhead soon developed into a leading bottler of Scotch whisky. In 1972, the company was sold to J. & A. Mitchell & Co. Ltd, the parent company of Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown. This marked a new phase in Cadenhead's history, integrating the company with one of Scotland's best-known distilleries.
